Givenchy Bets Big on Non-Traditional Shapes With Its Spring 2020 Bags

Hand carried purses are the new thing, it seems...

Clare Waight Keller has consistently designed for handbag heavy brands (she came from Chloé before taking on the creative director role at Givenchy), and when Waight Keller presents a new collection, handbag aficionados take notice. However when the Givenchy Spring 2020 collection was presented last week at Paris Fashion Week, a bag-heavy collection was not what fans received. The presentation did feature a few new handbag shapes, but new iterations of current Givenchy hits like the Mystic bag and the Eden bag were nowhere to be found. It’s typical for a designer to present a bag during fashion week that has already been released, but this time, Waight Kellar chose to put the focus on the brand’s new designs instead.

Models walked down the runway daintily holding slim clutch bags in every color from bright yellow and baby blue to basic black and a neutral grey. These large clutch bags are made of smooth leather and finished with a monochromatic Givenchy logo. Braided detailing differs on these runway bags—some feature a braided trim on the top of the bag while others have a knot detailing on the sides. Short straps appear to be removable on some versions, with a wristlet strap was also shown as an option. Models clutched a large bag under their arms, which appears to be in the same bag family.
