Founded in 1941, quintessential American brand Coach is coming up on its 80th Anniversary and the brand is kicking off a celebration with its spring 2021 collection. Coach has come quite a long way from the family-owned and operated leather goods company that it began as. Today, the leather goods company has evolved into a huge brand known around the world, and for many, the Coach brand is synonymous with nostalgia. Fittingly enough, this celebratory collection, which is being presented look by look on the brand’s Instagram page, is a mix of new, vintage and archival styles. Titled ‘Coach Forever’ this new collection, designed under the reign of Creative Director Stuart Vevers, is refreshingly cool. The brand looked to its Coach Family to present this celebratory season, featuring icons both new and old such as Debbie Harry, Megan Thee Stallion, Kate Moss and more.

With this collection Vever’s also further tapped into the brand’s growing focus on fashion’s sustainable future. The brand is committed to rethinking fashion’s impact on the planet, and this collection not only introduced new sustainable designs, but also tackled consumerism and overconsumption, by repurposing pieces from past collections. As for the bags, classics like the Dinky, and Coach Rogue are featured here as well as an iconic reinterpretation of a 1960s classic, the Cashin Carry Shopping Bag. Dating back to 1968, this leather carryall was redesigned for today, and created in the brand’s hometown of NYC, as a Love Letter to New York. Featured in a myriad of colors, this redesign is sleek and classic in soft leather with clean lines. What makes Coach “quintessentially” American? The fact that, while still making a profit, they dumped all the skilled American workers responsible for their success and offshored production to cheap labor countries? That they continue to push the myth that they’re some kind of iconic premium American brand when in reality they’re just another mid-priced global company that makes products of varying quality? Time for them to stop waving the American flag in their marketing because that’s simply NOT what this company is really about.
At this point most “all-American” brands do not produce anything in the USA. NAFTA, globalization, and our own (political) decision making decided that manufacturing was unimportant to our economy. Coach isn’t the poster child for this.
So are they a Chinese or Asian brand now? Good, we Asians will gladly claim Coach as our own, thank you.
Be our guest. But be prepared — they’re not likely to wave an Asian flag the way they do the American one.
This. I remember walking into the Coach store back in the 80’s where it smelled like real leather and the quality/craftmanship was top notch, made in the USA. But they also appealed to a more conservative/mature demographic, for sure…simple designs, plainer colors and higher price tag (in those days). I appreciate the evolved style and their reach to younger generations but yeah, I wouldn’t consider them to be a premium American brand anymore.
I agree. Not to mention pushing their popular designs into their cheap outlet versions within months which makes me frustrated having spent sometimes up to 10 times the amount at the regular store to see it being copied into a cheaper version. They are pushing the MAGA agenda using cheap Chinese goods.

Truth be told the Prez and Ivanka did have their clothing lines made in China. (He had ties made and she had clothing, shoes, etc. made in China). While they were both touting buy “Made in America” products they were mass producing and selling products made in China. It’s the unfortunate reality and the facts, whether you chose to believe that he could do this, he did.
Only if there are enough Americans alive by November at the rate USA is going. And yes, I absolutely blame Trump for the pathetic disaster that US is turning out to be this year.

Well, gee, that was boring..and I love my existing Coach bags. I’ve always thought Dooney & Burke and Coach matched the pricey designers in quality and design. Dooney still does it for me..you cannot hurt those beautiful bags no matter how hard you use them, but the only bag I liked from this collection was the square shopper in the pastels.
Some of these are cute but I know if I go and look at them in person they will look and feel like a $50 bag. Are they $50? Cause they should be. How are they “American” when none of their products are made here??
Then don’t buy it. Nobody is forcing you. Go buy those similar bags that cost $50.
Is Apple an American brand?
Apple does not sell itself as a “quintessentially” American brand. It does not wave the American flag in its branding the way Coach does. In fact, they do anything but. The flag Coach waves is a false one and continuing to promulgate the Coach hypocrisy does PB no credit.
Are you aware that European designer bags are sometimes made in Asia as well? lol I’m sure you are willing to spend over $1K on European designer bags but being picky when it comes to American brands

Thank you, I knew he painted a lot of things, but not a banana. However, when I googled “Andy Warhol, banana” I discovered that: “In 1967, Andy Warhol designed one of the most iconic album covers of all time, featuring a simple yellow banana on the sleeve of The Velvet Underground’s debut record.” Regardless, he was popular since he took mundane objects (i.e. soup cans, etc.) and made them into pop art, as everyone knows, but still it’s interesting.
Anyway, what I meant to write was that the Coach banana strongly resembled the Prada banana, but in retrospect you are correct that they both resembled the Warhol banana.
I am biased because I have the t-shirt. 😛 So I noticed the resemblance. 🙂
I detest graffiti on bags, it makes it look juvenile and cheap. The one positive I can say is that I love pistachio in the first bag, not the bag just the color.
I actually love this ad campaign and the diversity in it is a big plus for me.

I can’t disagree with you, but someone wrote the the KKK response months prior. I remember because it caught me off guard since I hadn’t heard that before.
This collection doesn’t do it for me, but I still love coach. I know the coach business model and craftsmanship have changed, but I still think it’s quality. I often find designs and colors I love. These days, I’m gravitating to brands like Coach to satisfy my handbag addiction without spending designer money, especially with the aggressive increase in prices.
…guess I’d better tell the Old Guy who walks and feeds me to go sell his Coach stock…..Just kidding! People will buy anything, as it is a “Barnum and Bailey world” afterall… ?

Yes, I would gladly, IF they made a commitment to bringing back the quality of materials and workmanship they used to have. AND they paid workers fairly for it. I would not pay those prices for the quality of products they offer now, that is for sure.
They probably don’t care about people like you since you will probably be a minority of their customers. They are a bigger and more profitable company now since they started catering to the lower end market.

What if people refused to buy Coach products until the company transferred to the USA, hired American workers, provided fair salaries and benefits to them? The reality is that consumers don’t want to pay more for their Coach products because they are priced in a category that many people can afford. Personally, I don’t like Coach products because the quality is inferior to many other brands; however, when I pass Coach outlets they are packed full of greedy, bargain hunting consumers.
