UPDATE (Jan 15): The new Chanel US price increase is now in effect, you can find all the details in our coverage here.
One of the constant worries for Chanel lovers is an upcoming price increase to their favorite brand. So much so that we have a thread with over 555 pages on PurseForum dedicated to chatting all things Chanel price increases. A few things seem constant in the designer bag world: new bags will be made and prices will go up. And the latter is especially true for Chanel.
There was a lot, and I mean a lot, of discussion and thoughts on the price increases that hit Chanel in 2020. And just as the new prices hit, shoppers started worrying about the next price increase that may hit the brand. The rumor mill is swirling that for Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2021 collection, which should hit stores around February or March, there may be another price increase looming.
What to expect?
Right now this is a rumor, one that has gathered some traction but nothing has been confirmed. Chanel will not confirm a price increase before it happens and sales associates too are embargoed not to share this information with their clients. Yet, every year, someone with a bit more knowledge than the next is able to find this information and spill the beans. Right now, the rumor on a Chanel price increase for 2021 claims there will be a $400 increase on Chanel Classic Flap and Boy Bags and a $500 increase on Chanel Coco Handle which will affect the US.
The price increase in 2020 happened in May so this would be less than a year from the last increase. Bags in the 2020 increase were hit with anywhere from a 2.5% increase to a 25% increase, with the average being around 11-15%. We will keep you posted on any additional information we find out!
I stopped buying Chanel bags a long time ago, when some of the quality worsened and when they began to make most of their bags in shared factories w/ lesser luxury brands. I remember when my single flap Jumbo cost just over $2K, and I thought I would have a heart attack, as I handed over my credit card. Now they’ve priced themselves beyond what most are willing to pay.
They will have loyal customers continue to buy their bags, accessories, and clothes- but, I wonder if, and/or when, these increases will backfire.
Can you elaborate who they share their factories with? I haven’t heard this before and am curious to know more
Same. I just can’t see paying $6k- $8k for the classic bag and the quality has decreased. Also by sharing factories the knock offs are made with same leather ( I’ve see a few that are darn near undetectable). I will be investing my money instead.
I really like my Chanel bags, I have never had quality issues. I have heard from some that the seasonal bags can be suspect in regard to quality. I have a jumbo Classic double flap, I also have a few seasonal bags and all have be wonderful. I do think that quality should be first and foremost to Chanel, always. I will consider purchasing a Chanel 19, I like the look of it.
Not sure this was worth a blog post… Isn’t Chanel raising prices regularly?
A lot of people like to plan to try to nab a bag before price increases, so people do plan around these increases.
Yes, at least once a year.
I love Chanel and own a few but Hermes has beautiful and highly crafted handbags. Hermes is not as in your face, logoed as Chanel but just gorgeous. The handbag collector may want to rethink Chanel.
Hermes is beautiful in the craftsmanship but I don’t love the designs. Ultimately when buying handbags, the designs still matter most. I prefer the design of a flap bag that I can wear on my shoulder or crossbody.
Also Chanel doesn’t make you play games to buy a bag. I can just walk into any store and if they have it in stock, they will sell it to me. The only Hermes bag I really love is the Constance, but I’m not going to spend tens of thousands of dollars on random things just to prove myself worthy for them to offer one to me.
Why not both!
Hermes is far more beautiful than Chanel, IMO. I will say that I adore Chanel’s various iridescent bags, though!
I agree love those iridescent and rainbow bags. Chanel and hermes are totally opposite of each other. Hermes is too minimalist while chanel always boasts of elegant design. Chanel was always my first love-tweed pearls different colored hardware rhinestone hardwares i can keep going. I just love everything about it. You will never go wrong with both brands. Those are the only ones i will never sell from my closet.
You know, it’s the same damn bag that it always was. They haven’t done anything different and in some cases quality has declined. Chanel will continue to gouge prices as long as there are women wiling to part with what, for many people, is two months salary. It’s getting to the point where it’s obscene.
I totally agree. I feel like they’re really exploiting/taking advantage of people’s brand loyalty – whilst not even delivering an actual quality product.
The quality of their *actual* product has plummeted, so to compensate for the decline in legitimate prestige they’re creating an artificial sense of exclusivity by raising their prices. It’s so transparent – and gross. Team Hermes all the way.
I guess if I don’t like the bag in the first place, doesnt matter if the price increase…and with limited supplies everywhere – cant find anything anyways nowadays at Chanel or Hermes
Can some tell me the issues they are having with the quality of their Chanel bags? I’ve read several posts talking about the inferior product Chanel is producing, but no one has given any detailed reason of the brand’s decline in quality. I’m just curious if anybody has personally experienced this.
I overhead a man, who bought a bag for his wife, complaining (at the Neiman Marcus shoe counter) about the bags metal changing color and the quality just being terrible for the price. He said he called Chanel and they weren’t very helpful. I love Chanel shoes, but the bags, not so much.
I got two bags from two different boutiques in Canada, one in Vancouver one in Toronto. My Classic flap came with no tissue paper wrapping on the chain, and the plastic seal on the CC lock is half rubbed off. When I asked if they have a new bag, the SA told me NO. A week later after using it, and I didn’t use it all week and only on short outings, loose stitching came out on the front, on the edge of the outer flap, so now it’s back for repair, after a week of wear. My seasonal square mini also came with zero tissue paper wrapping anywhere, not on the chain and anywhere else, the plastic on the turn lock is nowhere to be found when I got it, and the chain came twisted with the leather half sticking out. Had to fix that manually. So yeah, that was my experience in 2020.
Also the SA were far less than enthusiastic, and I dealt with a few. The whole ordeal make me question why the heck I’m buying from them.
Carol, thank you for your reply. Sorry that you had such bad quality with your two bags.
Why are you taking these bags home when you see them in poor condition at the store???
Ha.Ha.Ha.
Wow – Two price increases in 8 months! And everyone says the quality is not what it used to be.
I saw the price and then I look at the machine made puncture holes that are the size of the Pacific Ocean. Not to mention literally everyone has a Chanel. To me it’s not exclusive or luxury. It’s kinda pedestrian. Hard pass.
