Celebrity Purse Lines: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Offering us the handbags nobody asked for

Celebrities and handbag lines go together like oil and vinegar, which is to say they are a common combination, but generally don’t mix well. This is partly due to the fact that, unlike a perfume that a celebrity can slap their name on if it smells good, handbags are very hard to get right. The current market is particularly tough: the contemporary market is crowded with creative and fun offerings, and the luxury market is mainly comprised of legendary mainstays.

Though there isn’t a lot of room for people who don’t know what they’re doing, that hasn’t stopped many celebrities from trying. It’s unclear who these celebrities think their market is: most luxury handbag consumers wouldn’t be caught dead holding any type of celebrity-affiliated confection, and the teenage fans that many of these celebrities have amassed don’t have the money to shell out for a handbag at even a typical contemporary price point. Some celebrity brands have offerings at a lower price point, which is probably the smartest option, but do teenage Selena Gomez fans even want to carry her line of Kmart purses? Do teenagers still like Selena Gomez? Why do I feel so old right now?

Anyway! Regardless of the challenges, these brave actors, models, singers, even Kylie Jenner too, have soldiered on, determined to offer us the handbags nobody asked for. Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Row/Elizabeth and James

The Olsen twins have actually done a fantastic job of breaking into fashion. Their luxury line The Row is well-respected among more tenured labels like Gucci and Burberry, and their contemporary brand Elizabeth and James is pretty darn respectable too. Would-be celebrity designers beware: Mary Kate and Ashley know what they’re doing. They live and breathe fashion and pioneered a whole damn aesthetic.

The Row Bindle Hobo ($1,490)

Elizabeth and James Tiki Crossbody ($195)

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham is another celebrity that is pretty serious about her fashion, and she’s built a pretty solid label. Her bags are simple and understated and I have no clue who is buying them, but there they are, season after season.

Victoria Beckham ($1,380)

Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP’s handbags from her label SJP are also pretty simple, though as per her label’s website, one of her design principles is using “color as a neutral,” so there is a more varied color palette. I actually quite like the Jackie crossbody featured on the website, but the Amie in brown is more ubiquitous on major retailer’s sites. The Amie makes me a little sad.

Sarah Jessica Parker SJP Amie Bag ($651)

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez teamed up with Coach in 2017 to create a capsule collection of handbags in 2017 then dropped a collection of handbags and clothing in 2018. I am deeply indifferent to both Selena Gomez and Coach, but together, they work. I would carry that bunny belt bag, no questions asked, and I’d barely feel embarrassed about its origin.

Selena Gomez x Coach Belt Bag ($195)

Gomez also did a line for Kmart in 2010, and the purses look like purses you’d buy at Kmart in 2010…

Jessica Simpson

These are exactly the type of purses you’d expect Jessica Simpson to design. I don’t mean that as an insult: these are fine if you have the same taste as Jessica Simpson and also don’t mind the fact that your handbag was designed by Jessica Simpson. They’re not very costly either.

Jessica Simpson Kai Tote ($118)

Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump’s bags don’t look too bad until you realize that they look vaguely familiar because they’re mostly clumsy knock-offs of iconic luxury bags. Pretty par for the course for a celebrity purse line. Both Jessica and Ivanka can be found at a discount retailer near you, and I must confess that both have drawn me in more than once before I looked at the label and was forced to question my own judgment.

Ivanka Trump Hopewell Crossbody ($150)

Kendall and Kylie

Kendall and Kylie didn’t need to break into the handbag arena: both have successful careers in their own right, one as a model, and the other as a lip gloss mogul and person who posts a lot on Instagram. But here they are, making me wonder who they thought would pay $300 for relatively low quality materials and derivative designs. The collection can now be found on Saks off Fifth too, which was always its destiny anyway.

Kendall and Kylie Poppy Backpack ($60)

Kendall and Kylie Textured Asymmetric Backpack (Was $175, Now $64.99)

They also have a Walmart collection which I actually like a lot more…

House of Dereon

Beyonce is perfect, but looking at some of the designs released by her former label House of Dereon reminds me that she is mortal after all. The line hasn’t been around for a while now, and you can really tell that these were designed in the early 2000s.

Rihanna

Lord please. Rihanna is reportedly in talks with Louis Vuitton to release a handbag line. I know I’ve been saying this whole time that I’d never buy a handbag with a celebrity’s name on it, but you can put Fenty on an old piece of toast and I’d mortgage my home to purchase it. Rihanna is good, and she is the only celebrity whose handbag I’d carry proudly.

Those Kendall&Kylie bags are always on discount. The designs are so basic, the materials look really shifty but the prices are ridiculously high. It’s so Kardashian; cheap, tacky and overpriced.

I saw their shoes in Saks. The quality was so cheap it seemed insulting to display them next to other brands. I think department store buyers should reject brands if the quality is low and not get pushed around by publicists (or whoever does the marketing).

I’m pretty sure the continued presence of Ivanka Trump items in some stores is a health hazard. If you touch one, you immediately become ill. Even though she’s finally shuttered her line, she continues to use her vile dad’s position to stockpile copyrights/patents in China. So I assume, more tacky knock-offs to come.

You are right. This is not the place. But IF the Trumps were concerned with keeping their businesses away from politics they would have divested like all ethics officials advised them to. IF the Trumps cared about perceived conflicts of interest, they would not have allowed senior advisor KellyAnne “Alternative Facts” Conway to violate the Hatch Act by publicly shilling for Ivanka’s brand. Ivanka, her father and the rest of their family are using the presidency to enrich themselves. That is vile. I have as much right to express this as any one here who finds Lagerfeld or D & G’s personal beliefs/statements to reflect poorly on their brands.

For someone who claims to be religious you’re an awfully rude person. Prayers aren’t going to fix our “disgrace of a country”; speaking up about the flaws of the president will. Take your own advice: if you don’t want to get “heavy” about a matter that you clearly don’t care about and think doesn’t affect you (newsflash: we’re neighbors; what happens in the US affects Canada), then don’t engage. Get off your high horse; you’re clearly the one who is an angry person as you were the one to whine and complain unprompted.

I wonder how the Obama’s and Clinton’s left the office of the presidency with exponentially higher net worth prior to becoming president? Even hundreds of millions. Trump’s net worth since becoming president has actually decreased by 20%. And surely past presidents have not used their position for anything personally financially lucrative? Certainly no quid pro quo for foundations, right? Book deals? TV shows? The horror!

Don’t knock her “vile dad” too much as he is probably the reason many here could afford those luxury items over the last couple of years. You may loathe him, but you sure benefit financially. And half the readers here are this “vile dad’s” supporters 😉

Last time I checked I’m not a member of the 1% who get the majority of the benefit from the tax cuts. And my modest retirement account was down -6% for the last year. So…no. It’s none of my business how people here afford their bags. But saying, “Yeah he’s gross, but his policies help me financially…” is not an argument, it’s hypocrisy.

OMG I don’t think he is gross! I think he is amazing, best president ever. I know some “loathe” him, which means “severe dislike”, it’s not synonymous with “gross”. I understand that not everyone thinks the way I do, nor is it necessary for me to want to make everyone think like I do. Isn’t that the point? We accept each other for being different? I am sorry you’re not 1%, and you’re retirement is down, truly. I know there are some who are not experiencing the benefits of this economy. Losing tens of thousands in deductions isn’t fun either, but the economy has made up for it with flourishing small business (I am a small business owner).

Since you are willing to admit you are a supporter, I will just say you are supporting a vile human being, who has no problem stoking the worst impulses in our society and fails to disavow white supremacists like the the ones who killed in Charlottesville, Pittsburgh, New Zealand and many others. Small business success is great. Trump is not.

Well if you’re business is booming (thank God for capitalism, socialism would wipe out 50% of the disposable income for tpf’ers) price increases are negligible. But when all you guys are over your honeymoon with socialism and hugging Maduro, I think you’ll be begging for something as simple and joyous as a price increase on a Chanel 🙂

^^ Where capitalism = the very epitome of social justice (not SOCIALISM) implicit in those philosophies, ensuring intellectual, creative, religious and inventive freedom, and the right to compete in a free and open marketplace where government is only present in various and separate contexts, not as one “ruler”.

I would really like to know how in the world you managed to mix capitalism and social justice. And just how can you claim Greek philosophies support capitalism ?
In Sophocle’s Antigona there is a famous part from Creon, uncle of Antigona, where Creon actually laments on money and profit. He draws the distinction between kerdos (profit) and kruxe (money, gold actually) and complains it is causing disaster in the society, tearing people apart, lost of values and so on.
Then, if you look at the most influential of Greek philosophies, Platonicism, Platonicism is all about getting the 3 more important things together, which then reaches perfection : Beauty, Good and Truth. There is no research of profit. Nor is there in Neoplatonicism.

Moreover, you can not pretend capitalism epitomizes social justice. Capitalism per se is vampirism, you just need to take a look at the state of the planet to acknowledge this. If you do not Believe me, then read Das Kapital, perhaps it will enlighten you (pun intended, since you’re such a fan of philosophy).

geez, what a gross snobby and judgy article. You don’t need to like the bags, but you don’t need to look down your nose either. If you’re so dismissive of celebrity fashion sense, why does your blog constantly feature posts obsessing over what bags celebrities are carrying. If you’re going to criticize, at least substantiate your opinion. You don’t give a single concrete example. ” you can really tell that these were designed in the early 2000s” — Show an example. Explain which features are from the early 2000s. “for relatively low quality materials and derivative designs” — Which materials? Which designs? “they’re mostly clumsy knock-offs of iconic luxury bags” — Which bags are knocking off which luxury bags? What makes them clumsy? You want to be snarky, fine, but at least include some actual informative content in your writing.

Actually, there is a lot of truth in this article. Many of these designer’s handbag lines have reputations that precede them. Facts are facts. Mostly, the author is poking fun and not being snarky. Also, the content is self explanatory for anyone with a working knowledge of handbags; no further detailed explanation is necessary.

How about an undercover article from those who design/make/market/sell these purses/bags?
Anyone in the industry has insider stories about the bags we see and designs that never see the light of day.
Just protect their identities and the article will write itself.

First of all, this is a place where we can all come to one place and leave the stresses of day to day for a second and come together to talk about something we all agree on. OUR LOVE OF BAGS. Let’s leave it at that.

Now as for the trump thing,

Let me just say this.

If you’re a woman and a trump supporter….

If you’re a gay man and a trump supporter…

If you’re a person of colour and a trump supporter…

If you’re any of those, you shouldn’t be pro trump and if you are, I’m not gonna waste my time arguing a point that’ll never be heard. It’s best to teach young growing minds right from wrong, not a bunch of grown men and women who have already decided in their minds (however fu**ed up it may be) that they will support someone like that and go crazy on a purse blog about taxes and small businesses and abortions.

Just let people be. You’re not gonna win. You could present a supporter with 3 pages of facts and they’ll say “fake news”.

I’m sure their MAGA hats looks AMAZING with their birkins that trumps tax cuts help them get. Hahahaha.

Can we please have one place to go that is not infected by politics? This site is about purses and fashion! It doesn’t matter who is president…approximately 1/2 the country is unhappy. It was the case in the 8 years Bush was president, the 8 years Obama was president, and now the 2 1/2 years Trump has been president. To get to the position of president…you haven’t lived the life of a saint. Everybody needs to just move forward…but based on all the comments below, some are still stuck at 11/8/16! Get on with your life and enjoy the love of handbags and fashion…something that can unite both liberals and conservatives!!!

This article should have been veted, & the Ivanka Trump bag deleted (because it’s obviously a trigger to lose one’s head! Any writer or editor should know that)! But, more agregious – the moderator (who according to Disqus, that provides the availability for a comment section here, is the OWNER of this Blog! They decide who to ban, block, or delete, & those choices are not fair or even consistent – as you can read throughout the Comments here! So, I’m leaving. I want no part of a place which allows such vile comments to stand. I’m sure my comment here will also be deleted.

I think it’s important to make an effort on showing more transparency in the industry, especially regarding who really designs product.
As someone who works in the industry I think it’s important for editorial write ups to be realistic and point out when referring to “celebrity lines” that the vast majority of the time, they are not actually the ones designing the bags. Let’s not refer to them as the “Designers” unless we know they really are doing it. They may not be even involved at all anymore nor were they really ever in some cases. It often is more about putting a persona to a product line. In other circumstances, they may be involved a lot more, but it is a rarity. IMO The Row & Beckham are totally different circumstances & in a different arena as they’ve created fully separate fashion companies on their own. A celebrity license line or “muse” can be quite a different story….
