Megs recently posted about her love of card cases and it really sparked my desire to purchase a new SLG. If you’re new to the purse world and not sure what SLG means, it stands for small leather good. You may assume that means card cases and wallets, but the SLG category actually includes a selection way beyond that. Passport holders, phone cases, pouches, cosmetic cases, and even wallet on chains or small crossbody bags are part of the small leather goods category.
Purchasing a small leather good can be an inexpensive way to purchase an item from a luxury brand. I recently posted about my desire to buy a Birkin bag and I plan on purchasing my first Hermès SLG this fall to acquaint myself with the brand. I am currently eyeing the Carre Pocket Pouch, and truthfully it’s become a borderline obsession for me. Price points are typically lower for small leather goods and it can be a great way to familiarize yourself with the quality of a brand before purchasing a handbag.
I’ve spent more time than I would like to admit browsing the SLG selections from a few of my favorite premier brands over the last few weeks and I’ve established quite the wishlist. Despite my lifelong love of handbags, I am very new to the world of SLGs…in fact, I don’t even own a luxury wallet. I’m ready to dive right in and buy one or two SLGs to fill the void in my collection.
What’s your favorite SLG? I’d love for you to share in the comments below so I can check it out!
#5 YSL card case should read “monogram”. Otherwise, great article!
SLGs are my vice – I just remembered I have a LV Empreinte Clés sitting in its dust bag. I need to dig it out and put some stuff in it! <3
I love SLGs. Usually it’s the color that’ll draw them to me the most. My most beloved compact wallets are from LV (Compact Adele & Compact Twist), but these days I only browse Hermes for SLGs to be honest, because the color selection is just so, so much better. Calvi, Bastia & Ulysse is usually what I go for in Hermes. I do sometimes fall for other brands too: Coach can have really cute colors, and Celine’s card holders can be amazing too.
The YSL Uptown Pouch in Croc is my favorite purchase in the last year and is beautiful, classic, well-made and well-priced. My go to for carrying the essentials for errands or date night.
The Gucci pouch is so cute
I have a WOC, but it’s a vertical, slouchy one (think – old-timey coin purse). Structured wallets look nice, but I just can’t fit my daily things in one. Most can’t even fit a phone without a case and I end up using a bag instead.
Love the Hermes, can’t afford it.
I love it too, but it’s impractical. On the Hermes website this Pouch has only “1 credit card slot” which makes it unusable for me. Also, the description states it is “13”x13″”, but this must be a typo since it looks smaller.
Yes! I noticed that massive typo too. 13”?
Wow, 1 credit card slot. Seems pretty useless.
It’s one of their most over-priced SLGs imo. I don’t get why, no matter how cute the pattern printed onto the leather is. Maybe it’s super delicate to print, and they throw out a bunch in process during QA/QC, and the price makes up for it?
I don’t know…
I really love the bags / items you pick out. ? I only own 3 designer tier bags a mulberry Bayswater, a miu miu Bow bag
(my all time favorite) and a Marc Jacobs Stam. And I personally never felt the need to buy and SLG because I always figured they would get beat up or scratched easier. Not to mention I could buy 2.5 contemporary bags for the price of the Hermes wallet. So due to that I don’t think I could ever pull that trigger even if I were a millionaire. That being said the Hermes is too cute and totally see the appeal. That being said my favorite contemporary purchase in the SLG category is my Aimee Kestenberg makeup bag because it has so many pockets. Or my coach deep patent purple card case. Both are lovely. I got the makeup bag for only 12$ at Marshall’s.
