Valentino Plays With Texture and Oversized Studs for Its Resort 2021 Bags

Rockstuds just got a giant new look...

Pierpaolo Piccioli, like the rest of us, had a lot of extra time on his hands throughout his time spent in quarantining Italy, though he never stopped working which he told Vogue when discussing his resort 2021 collection for Valentino. The collection as a whole posses a modern yet quintessentially Valentino feel. As for the bags, and there were many, Piccioli seems to have been inspired by the current direction of the accessories industry while still pulling inspiration from the brand’s archive.

Textured, petaled leather appeared on many bags throughout the collection, which is a continuation of the new Atelier line shown on the runway for FW 2020. Reminiscent of the Valentino Petale line from the late 2000s, this layered leather technique appears on both totes and crossbody bags of varying sizes. The focus on craftsmanship as well as the brand’s rich DNA, which is rooted in details and couture values, is apparent in these intricate designs.

While the brand’s new Supervee logo is seen, it does not appear to be a focus within this collection, rather Piccioli has chosen to reinvent Rockstuds yet again, introducing a giant version of Valentino’s most iconic hardware. Oversized golden studs appear on the brand’s newest Rockstud bag, which takes a cue from the current maxi-movement in fashion featuring oversized quilting, a more relaxed silhouette and a chunky chain handle. This bag is seen in numerous colors as well as in a knitted novelty version. The studs also appear on large tote, which is one of many bigger silhouettes in the collection—a far cry from past collections. Take a detailed look at the bags from resort 2021 below.

I’ve been a huge Valentino fan since the early 2000s and I have to say this collection is truly disappointing. The petale line was feminie and elegant while the classic rockstud is edgy. These look like fish scales and giant scars on a bag (sorry!)

Looks like Valentino is having an identity crisis…

I adore my collection of earlier rock stud bags, but I have been very disappointed with the direction of Valentino for quite awhile. First that ugly large metal logo, and now this hideous collection. Such a shame.

BooBoo

Large quilts, soft structure and big metal. Looks like a rip-off of the Chanel 19.

I don’t like all of them. It appears designer running out of ideas with those kinds of design. Why don’t you make it simple? I still like the current Valentino small studs.

I can’t!

I love Valentino, but I’m not a big fan of the large rockstud style. There’s no need to scream your brand’s name. Sometimes a subtle design says everything about the brand and the lifestyle that’s associated with it.

I like the large Rockstud and the layered petals. Looks fresh after the big logos and all the quilting. Very intrigued by the petaled crossbody with the large guitar strap that says atelier…looks like a good bag for travel (if we ever are allowed to go anywhere again.)
