What’s Up with Padded, Plush Pillow-Like Bags?

This popular trend is one I may never quite understand

I’ll get straight to the point: I’m seriously perplexed by the concept of a puffy, padded, pillow-like handbag. Yes, many of them are sleek and chic, but they don’t come cheap either. And yet, I still don’t quite understand how this trend became a “trend.”

Clearly I’m in the minority here, as puffy and padded bags have continued to gain popularity since they first appeared in late summer and early fall.

Maybe it’s because I’m from Miami, and wearing a padded bag with the texture and look of a puffy coat may appear as a bit odd. Or, maybe I’m simply not trendy enough for this specific style. Either way, these bags overwhelm me. I just don’t know how to feel when I look at one. (Does anyone else agree? Or am I alone on this? It’s OK if I am! Sigh.)

What’s even crazier is I never (ever) considered buying one for myself, but (and there’s always a but), the more I see the Bottega Veneta Padded Cassette Crossbody Bag (and all of the magnificent colors it comes in), the more I wonder if I should consider adding it to my collection.

But then I remember I live in Miami, and something about a padded, plushy bag seems a little heavy and overwhelming for the climate down here – especially with summer only a few months away. (Time flies, people!)

I’m a fan of some of these but not all. IMO it’s because they are reminiscent of the 90s for me which I loved. The BV and Saint Laurent are wonderful.

I’m obsessed with the BV! Dying for it in the off white color. It’s so creamy and dreamy looking.

I love them, not always because of their style, but because I just want to HOLD them! But I live in South Louisiana, where summer lasts about 10 months of the year. So I think it’s a no-go for me. (Wish I could find a budget version!)

Kenzie

Yeah the variety of textures/aesthetics creates more “visual interest” in outfit as a whole.

Candee

No, I was convinced that I didn’t like them, or need them, and then you post a photo of the Balenciaga bag that I have never seen! Oh! I can’t read this blog without falling in love with one bag or another! This is not good…for my wallet!

I love most of these bags!

You just made me realize two of the bags on my soon-to-get list are padded bag, I guess l like them then:)) The Bottega is to die for!

Lori

I’m with you on the padded bag trend. I live in Newport Beach and perhaps its the same aversion to puffy jackets that thankfully aren’t necessary for warmth & thus can be avoided.

That being said, I agree with Candee that I hadn’t previously seen the Balenciaga and it may be the exception, Especially given the fairly reasonable price.

You didn’t include the Chanel, which I do love for the heavy mixed chains, but feel is too trendy for the cost.

Darja

I like only Bottega Venetas. So much that’s I’m planning to own one very soon. They look so polished while puffy.

But, don’t classic Chanel bags look puffy as well?
