I’ve noticed something lately, and I’m sure you have, too—vintage bags are everywhere. The thing is, many of these bags are not quite old at all; in fact, with one swift Google search, you can probably find that classic Gucci bag you spotted on a super-stylish stranger. These days, many of the hottest new bag releases are actually not new at all, and designers are giving us some serious throwback vibes by delving deep into brand archives to bring back the classics. First, I noticed it with the Gucci Ophidia, and then recently there was the return of the Dior Saddle Bag; then, yesterday I was aimlessly scrolling—the online equivalent of window shopping—when I came across a very classic looking Burberry Bag. It was at this point in time where I realized there’s no denying that relaunches and vintage-inspired bags have indeed become one of the biggest trends of the moment. Some may say the original is always better, but I’m loving this trend big time. What about you PurseBloggers? Do you love it or would you prefer the past stay in the past? If you’re about to hop onto this trend train than we’ve got ten picks to tickle your fancy.
The Return of the Designer Classics
What's old is new again, but would you wear a vintage-inspired bag or is the original always better?
I’d rather buy vintage inspired as it is way, way, way too risky to buy second hand if you care about authenticity. I would prefer an vintage bag if I knew exactly where it came from, like if my grandmother had bought it herself or something like that. 🙂
I like the concept of vintage inspirations, but that Burberry bag doesn’t look attractive to me at all 🙁
I could easily find the original for half the price in great condition, and might I argue, in better quality at pre-loved sites! Though I somewhat enjoy this vintage revival so that I could now wear my old-school Ophedia and still be hip with the masses, I mostly think it’s a lazy cash grab. Instead of coming up with pricier saddlebags and Fendi baguettes (who’s logo I still despise to this day) I’d rather have designers create something new and original—a new “classic” for a fashion house. Sure, it takes a stroke of genius and a lot of effort, but it’s surely better than relying on the designs of a past designer. It might even backfire on you when critics compare you to a past designer because of it aka. John Galliano’s saddlebag vs. MGC lack thereof.
I hope Saint Laurent brings back the Muse bag so that my old one will be on trend again.
The Gucci & Fendi take me straight back to elementary school in the early 80s.
I love vintage! My Mom used to say hold on to your nice things as everything comes back in style. Now, if only Gucci would bring back the navy monogram canvas I would be happy!
I don’t care for these bags. They look ugly and kinda remind me of very very old and sticky bags I saw at the used market.
