The Best Matte Black Bags at Every Budget

Can't decide between gold or silver hardware? Go with one of these ultra-cool matte picks

When it comes down to the finishing touches of a bag, a bag’s hardware can easily be the deciding factor of whether or not to pull the trigger. While some handbag lovers aren’t deterred by the color of a bag’s hardware, others prefer gold over silver. Then there are those who’ve found a place in their bag-drobe for both, but are careful when putting the finishing touches on their outfits.

Personally, I don’t mind if my jewelry or other hardware on my outfit, say belt buckles or buckles on my shoes, don’t match my bag’s hardware. However, I know a lot of people that do. If you’re one of them, we’ve got a solution for you: matte black bags.

Matte black bags are not only a great alternative for those who have a matching obsession, but they’re also an incredibly chic option that any bag lover’s closet needs. Matte black bags are incredibly cool and stylish, and they’re also far more understated for those who don’t want everyone to know that their bag is designer. Below we’ve rounded up 12 options at every price point.

Rebecca Minkoff Small Love Crossbody Bag ($195)

Marc Jacobs Snapshot Bag ($310)

Tory Burch Fleming Crossbody Bag ($478)

What about bags for the rest of us. We are not all rich kartrashians

Stephanie Meyer

There is always secondhand. There is this exact RM bag on eBay currently for $75 and some cheaper smaller ones. Maybe the price points don’t appeal to all but we can all appreciate a beautiful bag. ?

Sara

What would you be interested in seeing based on what you can afford? If you provide more information re: what your budget is perhaps PB can guide you into a market that meets your needs. For myself, I shopped at TJ Maxx for years because the bags were inexpensive. Also, I had my family to support so I was on a tight budget.

Sara

I don’t know your budget, but the Rebecca Minkoff Small Love Crossbody Bag ($195) is relatively inexpensive. Also, despite the price these bags are well made. They are worth checking out, if you are interested.

TKS

You sound lovely. Can we be friends?

Yoshi1296

Did you even read the title of this article? They did a fair job in providing a bag option for every budget from $195-$5,400.

Kyle

I’d love to live on the ivory tower where one could think that $195 for a handbag was inexpensive. Like even though I do buy bags upwards of $5400, I realize that $195 is way out of MANY budgets.

Yoshi1296

Notice that I said they did a FAIR job. They didn’t hit the nail on the head. Obviously $195 is still a lot for many people, but it is not as unrealistic as the other prices. And for a brand name bag, $195 is still fairly good. Not many brand names carry bags for cheaper. And being that this is purseblog, a focus on brand names is one of the main aspects of the blog.

If you feel a $195 bag is expensive, this probably isn’t the site for you. They are serving their target demographic and you could probably find more appropriate content that inspires you somewhere else.

Kat

I think they did a good job being inclusive of different budgets, but the reality is that sometimes you can be priced out of a certain trend. It’s nothing to get offended or upset about.

Marcia L.

You do realize that your statement is incongruent, right? You state “bags that cost $195 are too expensive for “MANY”, but you can buy a bag upwards of $5400″? You don’t make sense and your rational is flawed. Also, what number constitutes “MANY”? Words like “MANY”, “A lot”, “Several”, etc. are nebulous that have no meaning without factual data, from legitimate sources, that can back up your statement. Just an FYI.

Kyle

Karen, please. Is this seriously your straw man argument? $195 is a lot of money for MANY. Do you really need wage, cost of living, poverty, etc. stats to know that? You proved my point exactly. Just because I can afford something doesn’t mean other people can. Furthermore, just because I can afford something doesn’t mean I am blind enough to realize my place of privilege.

Marcia L.

And Karen Karen you just proved my point! Thank you!

CheliGuevara

Exactly, thank you. A lot of us actually have families to support and bills to pay. Not all of us are born rich or marry ugly rich men.

Jennifer Mathis

LMAO:)

Kyle

I really want to understand what kind of lives these people lead that they have normalized $5000 bags. I seriously count every one of my blessings.

TKS

Ones who are financially successful (and the stereotypes that women have to marry for money are laughable) and can afford to do so. Being that there are almost 19 million millionaires in the USA, having money is not exactly rare, and over 70% fall in upper and middle classes. Was that a trick question anyway? Cuz didn’t you just say you buy bags “up to $5400”? Is this where socialism comes in? Feigning inversive superiority to shame those with more into “equalization”? Also why do all of you people use fake names and post as “guests”? That says a lot.

Marcia L.

Spotted the Trumptard.

Marcia L.

Shit! I didn’t write this! Someone (Kyle?) is using my profile name, what a piece of work! Ignore the negativity. I’m done responding on this blog. If my name is used, again, it’s not me.

TKS

Some great psychopathy on here. No worries. Time for us both to move on. 🙂

TKS

PROUD Trumptard. You forgot “proud”. 😉

Marcia L.

No, I didn’t write this. Read below. I thought it was sent to you, but I mistakenly sent my response to me. Anyway, now I’m done responding on this blog.

Tami

“Ugly rich men”? Well, there’s a stereotype.

The ratchet

Well people don’t usually go on yachting blogs to promote dinghys or sportscar sites to laud smartcars…I am pretty sure specialized blogs have target audiences. I don’t think this one is geared towards bargain shoppers. And $195 is cheap for nearly everyone in the US for those that actually CARE about buying a great bag. Many people couldn’t care less, and indeed carry burlap sacks. All the housekeepers on my block (legal and well paid before you ask) carry LV, Gucci, Hermes and Chanel. 🙂

Kyle

You sound pretty ratchet, let’s be real. I should move to your area to become a housekeeper, huh? If I had known that I could afford to carry Hermes as a housekeeper, I probably wouldn’t have wasted all this time in my current career. I’m just not very good at dealing with ratchet rich people. 🙂

Lori

I noticed the prices ranges too and thought how great it was they covered all bases. And that $195 RM bag is super cute.

Sparky

Nice but I’m concerned about how they wear. I’d go for the low end styles because I assume the black on the hardware will chip or scratch revealing the base metal essentially ruining the whole look. Anyone out there had this experience?

Aimee

I purchased the Dior Lady Dior in matte black and love it! It is stunning! I have no issues with the black on the hardware chipping.

Marcy697

I have the matte navy and no chipping on it. She’s beautiful.

Lori

The Dior is to die for. I think that is one of the best bags on the market.

Candee

I feel that PB recognizes that everyone has a budget to purchase bags. Obviously, some have a thrifty budget and some a healthier budget. While this post may not incorporate all price ranges, it’s a good guideline to assist anyone interested in purchasing bags, according to their particular situation. I appreciate the efforts made, by this author, to provide PB readers with several bag options.

2014Renee

Agreed Candee.

Kaitlin

four_doxies

I just bought the Twist MM this past week, love it!

Kat

I love this look. I would gladly wear any of these (except the Stella McCartney. Hard pass on that one.)

Jana Bonthoux

Any designer bags are going to be expensive. If the 150.00 $ handbag is expensive for some people maybe they shouldn’t be looking at designer handbags period. Just purchase regular handbags and don’t complain if you can not afford them.

Justina Anglick?

I think the YSL and Tory bags are the best in this article. I also love the Marc Jacobs one for a more sporty look

I hear everyone on the price range. It’s hard to justify $5k for a bag in most households. What would be a reasonable price point for a small black high quality designer vegan leather bag? (Vegan leather for us animal lovers) 🙂 Assuming you love the style and functionality of the bag? I would love to know opinions…. $1,000? $500? $250? $150?

kadie

just added the matte black saddle to my list. Have been looking at it for a while in other colors
