If you’re anything like me, you likely gravitate toward bags made of leather. But that’s not to say other materials (suede, beads, wicker, nylon, and fabric) don’t catch our eye every now and then.
Does that mean we’d spend a small fortune adding a cloth bag to our collection? I vote no, but no judgement either way. For me, leather is a lot more practical. It wears better and is easier to take care of. Just think: one accidental spill of wine on a fabric or tweed bag, and you’re done.
Anyway, as we approach the dead of summer, I’ve noticed more and more designers unveil new and exciting purse styles where fabric and cloth materials take center stage. The irony is the prices are just as high (sigh), even though said bags are missing the crucial component of leather, which is usually to blame for a purse’s high mark-up.
Nevertheless, they’re still fun to look at. Browsing without any intention of purchasing is therapeutic, and these 13 bags surely don’t disappoint. While you won’t see me drop nearly $4,000 on a tweed Chanel or $2,000 on a YSL denim crossbody, it doesn’t hurt to glance around at this season’s latest and greatest.
If you *had* to buy one, which would you pick? I’d default to the Chanel, only because I think the Gabrielle has enough staying power to become a classic.
I like the 2 Fendi bags, and the YSL bag is for festival use only. I feel like that bag will go in and out of style several times. The Chanel bag is a bit much in appearance but not bad in price (for Chanel pricing – which is not currently in the budget).
No, no and no. I guess I am not a multi colored bag kinda gal….
It looks like the Wandler Zebra bag is dyed calfhair, not fabric? In any case, the Etro bag is rather different and cool but I barely recognize the same so $2300 is quite steep, for a fabric bag no less. I don’t love expensive fabric bags (say, >$100) because some leathers can age beautifully and get better looking as it’s used, but fabric never seems to work that way. Fun picks, though!
I don’t really like most of these, but I do like the Chanel tweed. Chanel makes a beautiful tweed, but I have yet to purchase one.
THANK YOU for featuring Etro- I’ve thought them underrated for a long time! But why wasn’t Missoni (my favorite fashion house) included in this?! Also, that Kooreloo weirdness is so bad that I love it! I think it’s great “jolie laide!”
Great selection! A lot of beautiful bags here.
The graphic design and color choice on the Akris bag is so lovely.
I agree, very beautiful color & pattern. I don’t care for the shape though.

The only one I like here is the Chanels Gabrielle Small Hobo Bag because I saw the look on the Chanel model a little while back and fell in love with the ENTIRE look. I’m not really sure how else you can pull off this bag without the rest of some other pieces from the entire collection but it’s a ‘very Chanel’ bag imho. The price isn’t as ridiculous as some of their others so that’s also a plus.
Edit : I wanted to add that I actually really love the entire ‘Métiers d’art 2018/19 collection’, some pieces are a bit too much but its very artistic and beautiful. Definitely check it out – https://www.chanel.com/en_CA/fashion/collection/collection-metiers-art-2018-19-new-york.html
I have a similar bag to the first YSL, it cost $10. I can’t justify such high prices for non-leather bags either.
