Last month, WWD declared the end of the ‘It’ bag era, a time in which iconic styles like the Saddle Bag, the Paddington, and the Baguette reigned supreme. From the nineties and beyond, these bags dominated the fashion world – from magazines and runways to the arms and shoulders of some of the world’s richest and most famous. Whether or not you fully agree with “It” bags being a thing of the past, have you ever thought about what your personal “It” bag is?
Forget trends and social media clout: What bag style do you default to and why? Big or small? With or without a crossbody strap? Leather or not? Colorful or neutral? I could go on and on… Even more interesting, why do you think you find yourself gravitating toward the same kind of bag?
Now, a time where the resurgence of “It” bags – most notably the Saddle Bag and the Baguette – has blown up, I say it’s time we turn inward and examine our own preferences – regardless of what Instagram or our “favorite” fashion blogger says we should like. (I’m looking at you, Dior Book Tote. Sigh.)
[sc_ic_ad1]Anyhoo, I’ll go first! I cannot get enough of any and *almost* every camera bag. I’m not so much concerned with the designer (Fendi, Chanel, and Gucci all have great varieties!), but more so the color, functionality, and quality.
In terms of functionality, the best kind of camera bag is small and chic but still holds a ton, namely a full-sized wallet and a water bottle. There also has to be a sturdy top zipper involved, at least one interior pocket, and a thick strap. That’s not too much to ask for, right?
As my collection grows, I realize I’m more concerned with finding bags that fit my own “It” bag mold – instead of going for a style that’s been plastered all over social media. As per WWD, that’s one of the reasons why the definition has changed so quickly and drastically in the last couple of years.
Do you think the concept of the “it” bag is a thing of the past? Who and/or what influences your buying decisions? Regardless of trends and runways, what’s your personal “it” bag?
Do tell! I’d love to compare notes.
I am currently more interested in crossbody bags mostly Gucci, YSL and Chanel. I need a hands free bag where I can throw in my wallet, keys, lipstick and I’m out the door.
I hate small bags. I like large totes with tons of pockets on the inside and outside. I like both sturdy nylon and leather bags that range from Marc Jacobs to Lug in brand. I must have a crossbody strap.
Chanel flap my forever love…can be worn 2 ways is glamorous in its own way iconic just an easy everyday bag for me that works well with any outfit and can transition from day to night
My it bag is Chanel 2.55 flap bag.
My fall back bag of all time is the Louis Vuitton speedy. Lightweight and durable. What more can you ask for?
The Chanel classic mini bag is my it bag right now. Although Chanel is a bit on the high end in terms of cost, I love that it’s a timeless piece. There are so many great designers right now it’s honestly difficult to have an “it bag”
It’s camera bags for me too
This is going to be boring to some….but right now the Rag & Bone Small Field Messenger bag suits my needs and is just enough casual cool to look good every time I wear it. I have it in light pink suede and brown suede. Black leather coming next.
Not boring at all, a nice looking bag! I never heard of it, but now I’m intrigued!
Maybe an Alexander Wang velvet Attica fanny pack (call it what it is), Givenchy Pandora or Loewe Amazona or any Bottega Veneta intrecciato cross-body… I know that’s a lot of different ones…
Bags big and sturdy enough to hold everything including a laptop. Totes, oversized satchels, the Givenchy hobo of last year. Give me a thick strap and roomy interior and I’m sold.
It bags aren’t really a thing right now. The collective would have to agree on the bag. But there are too many good choices and many new hot brands. So they are all “splitting the vote” so to speak. For me, LV is the OG of go-to it bags. But there’s only one bag that I’ve had in multiple colors of the exact same style, and that’s the Polene numero un. It’s cute, functional, and relatively affordable. Not everyone has it, yet. And it’s special b/c you have to actually order from them and wait for it to come from Spain (although shipping has gotten quicker somehow). It’s my personal it bag for now.
I have that in the grey. Gorgeous.
Oh my gosh I know someone who has been obsessing over this bag for weeks to the point where she might go to Paris just for that lol! It is definitely a beautifully designed bag!
I happily discovered Polene Numero Un! I own two, olive green and blue. They are affordable and gratefully not too many ppl own them!
I always seem to reach for my Celine Nano Luggage…crossbody, and still holds enough. I’m still living in the Phoebe Philo era…
I feel strongly it’s one of the best bags out there. Great structure, small size with large capacity, cross-body or shoulder, and it zips closed. LOVE. Doesn’t bother me that the strap isn’t adjustable because it’s removable so strap interchange is easy.
I’m all about practicality. That means a big tote that holds everything but the kitchen sink. Right now, I’m carrying a Gucci backpack.
You know… I’ve always largely ignored contemporary brands. But recently I’ve evaluated my needs and practicality..
So now my IT bag would be the reissued Kate Spade Sam bag from the 90s(?) with the pink label. I’m shocked because I really don’t care for KS in general but I want it.
For me, the Loewe Puzzle bag is my favorite It Bag.
My LV Dauphine bumbag ??
Crossbody for sure! Nothing too large – like messenger bag size- and nothing too mini as it just does not hold enough. My favorite crossbody that I own is my Gucci GucciGhost print medium GG marmont. Its just the perfect size!
