Revisiting the Classic and Chic Louis Vuitton Alma

I passed this bag up once, but it's back on my radar now...

Last month I started thinking about my next bag buy. Two options came to mind, two options that I’ve been thinking about for a few months, which to me means they’re good options. Through all the noise the Chanel Camera Bag and the Celine Nano Luggage Tote have stayed at the forefront of my bag-loving mind. I’m not yet ready to pull the trigger on either one of those bags, or any bag for that matter, but now I’ve added another option to the mix: the Louis Vuitton Alma BB in Epi Leather.

This isn’t the first time that I’ve lusted after the Alma bag. In fact, my eye was drawn to the Alma way back in 2008 when I got my very first Louis Vuitton Bag for my high school graduation. My Speedy 25 was the obvious choice—it was my holy grail bag after all, but at the last minute, right before the purchase was about to be finalized, my eye was drawn to the Alma in Monogram Canvas. The sales associate asked if I wanted to try it on and I immediately said no. In all these years I never regretted not giving the Alma a second look, but it was a bag that was kind of always on my radar. And when I outgrew a lust for adding more Monogram Canvas Bags to my collection, the Epi Leather version stayed on my mind.

Last fall I was in the market for a red bag, and though I ended up getting the Sac de Jour Nano in red embossed croc, an Alma BB was an option that I seriously considered. Right around the time I began my fiery quest, my parents were vacationing in Scotland and I knew that if the Alma BB was the bag I was ultimately going to purchase, the obvious thing to do was have them purchase it for me there. The difference in the dollar coupled with the VAT tax refund would have made it cost significantly less than if I were to purchase it in New York. I FaceTimed with my parents a couple of times, did the math to figure out how much it would cost, and even had them visit the boutique to check out the bag.

Ultimately I couldn’t pull the trigger on it because I had the Saint Laurent in the back of my head, and I’m totally content with the red bag that I eventually did buy. Yet even still, the Alma keeps popping up on my radar. A couple of weeks ago I saw a very chic girl wearing an Alma BB in Black and my first thought was ‘I need that bag!’ I’ve always been attracted to it, but more and more it seems like an incredibly enticing buy. It’s sleek and stylish, yet classic and not overly branded. I also adore that the hardware is silver, which would sit well amongst my current bag lineup, as most of my bags have gold hardware (including my go-to black bag). Lastly, in today’s climate, with bag prices reaching upwards of $2K, the price point is enticing as well.

As if by fate, the Alma once again popped up on my radar this week when I was clicking around on the Louis Vuitton website. There was a feature on the Alma listed on the LV NOW section of the website, a sort of ode to this iconic shape. It was created by Gaston Vuitton and initially named the “Squire bag”. It was relaunched as the Alma in 1992, and now over 25 years later it is a true symbol of Parisian elegance. The Louis Vuitton Alma BB Epi Leather is available via Louis Vuitton for $1,620.

I had a bag with the same shape. Hated it.

Sue

Why did you hate it?

Sparky

The tapered clamshell design. -You can’t fill it too much or it gets distorted. -You have to hold the top open to access the contents. -Somehow it felt dated soon after using it. Minor points but they bothered me enough to avoid this shape.

Angelika

Also agree, sold Alma for this reason

Gayle

The feeling is mutual ?? I used to like this bag a lot too then it went off for awhile and im loving it again now. I only have 1 louis vuitton bag before was a birthday gift from my mom. I dont buy louis vuittons because my mom has a lot of totes and one day it will be handed down to me. The alma is my favorite style aside from the speedy of course especially now with the extra sling. I just find bags versatile if they have that i can always wear it both ways. Im lusting after the epi leather line and the new vernis multicolor newly released line.

I have the Alma BB in red vernis and I
absolutely love it!

Blueboy09

Is the vernis difficult to care for? Do you have to baby it?

Master Green

The Alma in Epi leather is probably my favorite bag from Louis Vuitton: elegant and understated. Personally, I prefer the PM size over the BB.

DanD

I definitely agree Master Green. I have been reading your comments for a while and we have very similar taste! I just wish the Epi leather stands up to some abuse as all of the second hand epi leather pieces on the market that have been used are always cracking or peeling. Its a real shame because when this leather was launched, I fell in love with it.

Master Green

Epi leather is very hard wearing. There are a lot of pieces on the second-hand market that still look like new! We must not be looking at the same sites. 😉

I’ll have to check out the size difference. I can’t stop thinking about this bag! It’s so classic and elegant!

Master Green

You sound like SUCH A SUCCESS!!! HAHAHA

I don’t know why but the Alma has always made me think of a kids play-handbag. The shape looks very childish to me. Like a small girl playing dress up pretending to be a grown up. I want to love it and see it the way others see it, cause it is cute, but I can’t…… All I see is grown ups with a sort of kids theather bag…

Cinde

I understand what you are saying since there are bags that other’s love (Gucci soho) and I don’t see it. However, I also disagree with you since I think the Alma is sophisticated, elegant and timely. It’s been around for years and a friend carries one that belonged to her grandmother and putting aside the sentimental value it wears well (with only one spa treatment to replace the darkened handles).

Emily Degroth

The alma shape looks so childish in my eyes? I can’t say why but the shape makes me think of a kids “dress up”-purse. It looks “off” on grown up women in my eyes.

Is the BB the only size that comes with a shoulderstrap?

Master Green

The shoulder strap is sold separately for the PM and MM size options. There were also a GM and a Voyage size, but they were discontinued many years ago.

Donna Warder

I used to despise the Alma because of the rounded shape. But I’ve grown to love it. Maybe that will be my next LV bag – in the largest size, of course.

Divadeluxnyc

I have a violet vernis BB Alma and love it, it really punches up an outfit

Blueboy09

I want to get the vernis, but I always hear that it’s difficult to care for.

Oh! I had a similar dilemma back in 2013. I was looking for a red bad and decided on the Alma PM in red. I was vacationing in Paris and went to the LV St Germain store, tried it on but didn’t walk away with it.(God knows why) Fast forward half a year later, I too, bought a Saint Laurent red bag (the monogram cabas). Until today, I’m still lamenting that the LV Alma was the Bag That Got Away. Sigh! I know exactly how you feel!

Kaitlin Serio

There’s always another color option!! I’m really considering 🙂

realitygreene

So funny because I have also been lusting after this bag lately! It’s wasn’t on my radar before, but there’s just something about it. I do like the black, but also the navy blue color. Navy Blue is neutral for me. However, the color I love most is the fuchsia that was released a few years ago. If you google it, some gorgeous pictures from someone’s blog pops up. It’s soooo stunning and I haven’t been able to get that color out of my head.

DanD

The color is phenomenal! The ONLY critique I can give this bag is in the second boutique photo the seam sealing color, it’s so thick and black, it almost makes me think it looks like a fake. I definitely wouldn’t turn this beauty back though – Red & Black are always sexy colors (especially THIS red) that pop and draw in the attention. The first photo sold it on me.

So we have made Bernard Arnault the second richest person in this world by keep spending our money for the over mass produced luxury(?)items such as LV.
I no longer buying anything from LV since I can’t justify their latest price and quality.

Cait

OMG on my radar too. The bb size is perfect for running around but small enough to wear to dinner/drinks. I personally have the damier ebene on my radar for fall, but now you have me considering the black. Also – the top handles, cross body AND how it opens so wide with the dome shape make it so functional.

I was all over the fendi baguette hype but I think these classics are smarter choices in the end. Get the alma!
