Bottega Veneta’s Padded Cassette Gets a Chunky Chain Makeover for Pre-Fall 2020

Available for pre-order now, this bag is sure to be BV's next big hit

It’s been big changes all around since Daniel Lee took over the creative reigns at Bottega Veneta, and for Pre-Fall 2020, one of Lee’s newest cult favorite bags got a big makeover. While we first spotted this updated design last January when we introduced the brand’s Pre-Fall 2020 collection, today we’re taking a second look at this new design, which is sure to be a highly coveted hit. Introducing: The Chain Casette.

New for Pre-Fall, the Chain Casette takes the body of the original Padded Cassette Bag and adds a show stopping chunky chain strap. True to his aesthetic, Lee has taken a classic handbag element—the chain strap—and exaggerated its proportions to add a distinct and ultra-cool detail to an already beloved bag.

Available in a rainbow of colors from bright green and crimson red to neutrals like white and black, The Chain Casette is crafted from shiny Nappa padded leather strips, which are interlaced to create an oversized weave. While the leather version offers more versatility in that the strap is adjustable, the chain iteration is said to work as a crossbody bag with a strap that isn’t adjustable. A smaller chain detail hangs off the front of the bag so that a hand can be tucked through, allowing the bag to be carried as a clutch with the strap functioning as a detail. It’s worth noting that while the original Casette is incredibly lightweight and easy to carry, the new chain detail will likely add to the bag’s overall weight.

Aside from its chain, this Casette is not all that different from the original, offering an internal zip pocket as well as a magnetic closure. View more details via our post on the Bottega Veneta Padded Casette here. While the original Padded Cassette retails for $2,800, The Chain Casette is now available for Pre-Order via Bottega Veneta for $3,800.

Stunning but from the photos the chain looks too heavy for the bag.

I’m sorry but still eww. Can’t imagine someone carrying a pillow.

Lori

I love this bag, but it’s a bit too trendy for my style. I would love to see it in the wild. I bet it’s fabulous.

I know would love to get my hands on it also to see and feel!

Megan

I really like this. It’s fun and eye catching. Unfortunately, my budget doesn’t allow for dropping $4,000 on a bag that will be trendy for only a season or two.

I’m surprised how fast BV are changing up their bag styles. I bought the pouch for the simplicity and functionality of a cool clutch, and I love it… but I would never buy another one just because they added a chain.

I get that they want to keep things fresh, but I like classics for a reason. I think when they keep changing things Up so quickly, the average bag buyer doesn’t see it as much as a piece worth investing in. It’s turning luxury into very expensive fast fashion.

the chain cheapens the bag

Yes! I totally agree! I wouldn’t personally even pay 2k for this. The Jodie is wayyy better.

I like it, but won’t buy because of the price. However, with all of the price increases, with major designers, who has the money to buy expensive bags? With Covid-19 and the ensuing loss of jobs and income, and with the instability in the stock market, it now seems impossible to drop thousands on bags. Didn’t this virus affect ppl worldwide and thus their income source? I’m beyond confused re: the reasons despite some design houses rationalizing increases allegedly due to market fluctuations in the Euro, etc. Are there enough ppl to sustain these increases to keep these designers in business?

Living in Florida *sigh* I have seen that there is a huuuuuuuuuuge group of people who were fortunate enough that the pandemic hasn’t substantially affected them financially, and as a result they’re raring for things to get back to normal. Those people who are wealthy enough to see the price increases as minor annoyances have now started shopping in earnest partially due to retail therapy, and partially because they don’t see the current situation as a big deal. It’s these and people in their “keeping up with the Joneses” phase who I bet luxury houses are betting on to keep their profit margins afloat.

There’s a Bottega Veneta boutique in my mall. I really like this bag. The leather is beautiful. It’s very cool looking. The colors are gorgeous. With that being said, the price is too high. It should be no more than $2000. I say this because it’s not very spacious for the size. The poufy-ness takes up valuable interior space. Because of this, it’s a no.

LOVELOVELOVE!!

I think the chain makes the bag, but not for a $1,000 more lolllll. Really wondering what was the reasoning behind the pricing there seeing as how the dimensions are the same

Julie

Is that chain solid gold or something?!! ?

chris

Dislike the size shown on model — too big. Maybe a smaller version, but then that huge leather weave (which still reminds me of seat belt bags!) would be lost and the oversized chains would dwarf it. And non-adjustable crossbody chains are a no-go for shorter women. Won’t be in my closet anytime soon….

Sparky

Maybe it’s the other way around! The model is so skinny she is too small for the bag. The bag proportions are probably fine on normal people.

It’s a love/hate for me. I don’t hate the style of the bag itself. I love the teal and gold together. However, I’d like to see the chain in a more tasteful size. The chunkiness looks a bit gaudy to me and a trendy style like this shouldn’t retail for more than $1800 in my opinion.

Passerine

Agree. That chain does not look comfortable to wear. The heavy chain on my BV Olimpia (larger size) has put me off chain strap bags, at least from BV. And the price is simply ridiculous for a small bag that is very unlikely (IMO) to become a classic. Once I hit that price point, I head over to Moynat or Delvaux.

Huong Vo

Right? It looks heavy and if it is, I think it would feel uncomfortable. Not that I’d want a cheap plastic-esque chain, but I don’t want to wear anything that’d dig into me. I’m not into trendy bags at all, but this style I like. I agree that the price is a bit high. Thanks for telling me about the other two brands. I hadn’t heard of them before.

psny15

these picturize so well but so uncomfortable

Cheap looking, fast-fashion look, no brand continuity. Next
