A Look At the Evelyne III 29 As Your First Hermès Bag

Though not a Birkin or Kelly, the Evelyne shouldn't be overlooked

[Editors note: We wanted to provide a unique perspective on the Evelyne both from a first time Hermès buyer as well as a seasoned Hermès buyer, read on for the scoop from two of our writers including our very own Hermès expert]

The Hermès Newbie

I remember the first time I came in contact with Hermès. I was in Paris, for the first time, and dragged my reluctant mother into the flagship store on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. I haphazardly said to her, ‘Mom, you should buy yourself a bag (she was celebrating her 50th birthday), and while you’re at it, gift me a matching one.’ I clearly had no idea what I was talking about.

When we entered and glanced at a hefty price tag for a measly wallet, my mom shot me back the kind of glare I’ll never quite forget. Yes, many “firsts” happened all at the same time on that trip. It was the first time I learned of Hermès, the first time I entered one of the luxury brand’s boutiques, and unfortunately, the first time I asked my mother for a handbag in which she declined. (Out of my entire collection, she’s only bought me one bag, which was a birthday present. I digress.)

Suffice to say, neither she nor I were familiar with the storied fashion house. I was just shy of 18 years old at the time, with little money to spare on clothes and going out, let alone thousand-dollar bags. My mom could surely afford her fair-share of leather goods, be it at Hermès or someplace else, but with little knowledge of designer goods (she only recently got into purses… blame me), we quickly perused the store and went on our way.

It wasn’t until much later when I learned all that Hermès represented. Now I laugh at my first brush with the brand. Leave it to me to walk inside one of the most high-priced luxury boutiques in the world and have zero clue where I was and what it meant. If only I could have stayed completely uninformed on designers… I would have saved myself a great deal of money.

But that was then and this is now – and as my fascination with luxury leather goods grows, I can only dream of owning my own Hermès one day. Realistically, I think I would purchase a second-hand Birkin or Kelly, if given the opportunity, but either way, the thought of spending upward of $12,000 on a bag makes my stomach churn a little bit.

That’s where the Evelyne III 29 comes in. Before I knew anything about it, I had seen a handful of women carry it. I had no idea how much it cost, but I assumed it would be pricey. When I finally found it on Hermès’ website for less than the amount of a Classic Chanel Flap, I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least.

Ever since, I’ve had my eye on this lady. As the description reads online, this bag has been a hit since it launched in 1978 as an accessory for horse riders. It’s sewn without a lining and brightened up with an “H” perforation, with the thought being that the bag would initiate wear against the body in order to allow a horse rider’s equipment to dry. Though it very well may still be used for that today, I’ve mostly seen the Evelyne worn as an everyday crossbody, offering ample room for storage with a reliable and comfortable shoulder strap. Available in a host of colors, including a beige-like étoupe, noir, and a navy bleu nuit, most Evelyne bags are made with Clemence leather with an outside pocket, a larger tab for closure, and palladium plated hardware.

Though there are other sizes available, namely an adorable mini version, I’m focused on this specific model given its functionality as as an everyday bag. Though $3,375 is not exactly cheap, it’s incredibly more affordable when compared to a majority of Hermès’ other handbags and leather goods. My thinking is the Evelyne will provide the same great quality you’d expect to receive with a Birkin or Kelly, all without the hefty price tag and hassle of nailing one down. (The Evelyne is readily available for online order.)

I’ve checked out a few Evelyne models in store, and after some time with them, it’s evident the quality is everything you’d expect from Hermès. Not only that, based on the many celebrities we’ve seen touting this specific style, it’s clear the bag wears well. Judging by the photos, many of them appear to be in excellent condition.

As with any bag, I do have a few reservations. I don’t love that the interior pocket is essentially a bottomless pit. I fear my valuables will get mixed together, making the bag difficult to navigate at times. I also wonder how sturdy the closure tab is. That’s the reality of bag-buying, though – you win some, you lose some. But I’m willing to bet the pros outweigh the cons on this one, especially considering the cost and quality factors. Maybe a Hermès bag isn’t so out of reach after all.

The Seasoned Shopper

The Evelyne III 29 is an excellent choice, whether as an “intro-to-Hermès” or just an everyday addition to an already-established Hermès collection. Over the years I have seen this bag worn on women and men of every age and style. It is a simple, timeless and very functional design. It is easy to care for and use, and is a great go-to style for students, young moms, travelers, and people who either want or need to be hands-free with their bags.

With all that said, Clarissa’s concerns must be acknowledged. Yes, it can definitely be a “bottomless pit” and is not for those who like to keep their bag interiors organized, but that is a trade-off people make when one values capacity over organization. This is also a problem that can be managed, whether by finding a workable bag organizer, or by keeping those things that tend to disappear or fall to the bottom in different pouches or holders. The other concern – and this is the one that has actually kept me from purchasing this size Evelyne – is that not everybody can wear a crossbody bag, and there is really no other easy way to wear this. I have a smaller cross-body bag and my personal time limit is 15 minutes before the pain in the middle of my back starts. However, this is not an issue for a great many stylish people, and if you are one of them, then you should definitely consider this style.

Overall, however, I cannot recommend this bag highly enough, to all who are interested in it. It really does suit just about everyone, and as with all Hermès bags, it bears the craftsmanship and quality that Hermès is known and well-regarded for. It is for those reasons that the Evelyne III 29 is definitely worth the investment.

Everyone in the above pics is wearing this bag wrong! The perforated H is meant to be worn against the body.

Heather Hildebrand

Actually anyone in Hermes will tell you it’s okay to wear it either way. It was originally designated for the H to be close to skin because it had air hole to breathe. The “correct” way would only be if you are using it to groom horses. Otherwise, just enjoy the beautiful bag!

grace

I know! its so gauche

Linda Garrido

I just bought one in Paris, and the SA told me either way is correct.

Eliza May

2 years late to this post, but it was originally designed for equestrians and their grooms (I had an Hermes close-contact saddle, most comfortable!) and to carry body/dandy brushes and sponges. The holes allowed brushes to dry on the go, and were turned towards the body so bristles weren’t sticking out and dirtying other people, or flinging floating horsehair/grit onto rider/guest clothing.
These people who ‘wouldn’t wear fake’, and despise those who do — nothing like sticking your nose in the air while appropriating grooming gear. You’re wearing a brushbag for goodness sake, and honestly it’s gauche to display brandnames. Turn the aeration holes inward….

Fiona

Have you considered that the back of the back is better in front, just in case of pickpockets? The front pocket against the body makes it hard for any hand to get into it if it is placed against the body. Most buy it as a normal use bag to go shopping.

Gauche are the ones wearing bags which scream those gawd awful monograms or a huge Chanel imprinted on their bags.

Hermes Evelyne doesn’t scream Hermes. In some countries, they don’t even know what the H means. But their pickpockets will recognise the monograms of LV and Gucci or even on the lowest tier, a Michael kors or Marc jacobs.

Eliza May

Yes, I believe I did say the very words,
” it’s gauche to display brand names”.

Simple solution to pickpockets and the back pocket? Don’t put anything of value in the back pocket.

And if you have the H in towards your body, it looks more like a random leather rucksack, than that the wearer is wealthy enough to buy a 3-5k bag for ‘just shopping’.

Especially-skilled lightfingers will reach in past/beside the narrow top snap-strap to get to goodies — they reach inside mens’ coats into breast pockets and snatch billfolds without them being any the wiser, lift watches & necklaces off peoples wrists and necks.

Serious thugs & thieves will just yank a purse off the wearer. Those metal clips on the cross-body strap would not hold up a 5 year old. For my part, theft doesn’t really factor in my consideration of how to wear a bag.

Just for curiosity’s sake, is that definitive? I’ve never been to a H store where it’s displaced with the H on the back (not on display) for the Evie. I was at HW yesterday and spoke with my old H SA (she was at H before went over to HW) and she said she’s never heard of it. It doesn’t make sense to me that everything else has the front on display but the Evelyne is displayed with the back to the front (if the perforated H is supposed to be the back side). *thinking* *shrug and wondering*

HRCM

The front IS the perforated H even when the snap button is on the other side, but since that is considered a logo (and hence tacky) and definitely not an Hermès thing most of the nonfamous followers of the brand opt for carrying it with the H against the body

Linda

No, you are incorrect. I asked my Hermes S.A. who has been employed at Hermes for 20 years. She said that the “H” is meant to be worn against the body. She said that the bag was made to hold brushes to groom horses; it was meant for the “H” to be worn on the inside to make it easier to get the brushes in/out of the bag. She said that since most people don’t use it to carry horse brushes many people prefer to wear the “H” out. She said that it doesn’t really matter because people can carry it however they prefer.

HRCM

I’m not trying to be bitchy but how does wearing the H inside makes it easier to take out the brushes?
The H serves as ventilation which is now pretty much useless to casual wearers

TheCityGirl

Because the snap is on the actual front. When people wear it with the H outward the snap is against the body and it’s awkward.

Cat

I’m more annoyed seeing it so long! Doesn’t it drive people crazy when it swings around everywhere?!

HMinAZ

I don’t find it annoying at all. I have the Evelyne III PM and this version has a strap that is totally adjustable. Depending on what I’m doing that day, I may wear it with a longer strap so that the opening is just at my fingertips. But if I find that I’m getting in and out of the car a lot, I will adjust the strap to make it shorter.

I picked the Evelyne up in Paris and was told that it was originally designed to be worn with the H facing the body but I prefer to wear mine with the H facing outward. I have several different 7RP inserts and I like to switch them out (along with the Rodeo charms) to change the look up. I like to match the insert with the Rodeo charm, so I like having the H face the front so that the insert color shows through the holes.

I personally don’t find the snap awkward against my body at all. I would say it’s a personal preference. If you want to wear it with a more understated look, then you can wear it with the pocket & snap facing outward. Either way, it’s a beautiful bag that is truly comfortable.
I have the Evelyne in the TPM size as well. I really like the smaller size but it doesn’t have room for my iPhone or sunglasses, so the PM is my daily bag.

Karlie

You are correct, but I wear it both ways and it looks good no matter how it is worn.

kemilia

But then people wouldn’t know it was a Hermes bag if the logo wasn’t front and center! 🙂

TheCityGirl

My thoughts exactly.

TheCityGirl

My thoughts exactly.

Rebecca

That may be true, but I also wear mine with the logo out because I keep my “baby bag” things in the big bottomless hole and my wallet and phone in the outside pocket; so I feel safer with it against my body.

Tori

The Evelyne III 29 is a great bag. It holds a lot and despite it being described as a “bottomless pit” I have no trouble finding anything in it. Also, I can fit a lot into it without any pain in my back since I carry it as a crossbody. I love it for traveling, but my one concern due to the opening is that I will be pickpocketed in the crowded (packed in like sardines) subway. Therefore, I hold it closely to my body, put my hand over it and keep my wallet in the bottom with other items on top. I’ve been using it for traveling for years and despite my concerns (since I’ve never been robbed) it is a fantastic bag!

MademoiselleConnasse

Let’s be honest here: most people buy this bag because it’s one of Hermès’ most affordable bags and because it’s one of Hermès’ only bags with what equates to a giant, perfectly recognizable logo.

Sarah

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I carry one when I travel because it’s so versatile and travels well. I opt to take this over my many other bags, including my Birkins. However, I also see a lot of women, with young kids, carrying these. It’s a great bag since it holds a lot, has a deep interior and is very durable. It also allows these poor Mom’s to chase their kids around without spilling the contents of their bag. And it cleans up well. Lastly, many don’t carry the bag with the big “H” visible, but carry it the “right” way. 🙂

Valliere

I just sold mine because the fake Evelyne is everywhere . I see at least one a day, so this bag has completely lost its appeal for me now.

Carla

I despise fakes and the “fake” people that wear them.

Valliere

Totally agree ! I would never wear fake anything and it really ruins it for those of us that buy the real deal let alone how it affects the companies producing the bags.

Ams1970

Got mine earlier this year in etoupe and I’m very happy with it. It’s not a bottomless pit thanks to my LV wallet, pouches and Samorga organizer. I don’t see it as a year round bag: too slouchy and it shouldn’t get wet. I’ll put her away soon and bring her back out after the spring rains aren’t so frequent.

Giselle

What about the weight? I heard people mentioning it got heavy after carrying for a bit.

Heather Hildebrand

It’s actually surprising light weight!

Relentless

I would love this bag if not for the strap. Ugh….

Yaffa S. Porat

I have this bag in navy also. I love it as a weekend bag. The cross body effect, light strap and the way it hugs your body is perfect for me.

Ruby

I have this bag and I don’t like the strap. I wish I could switch it out ….

Magdalena Samo Zloo

I ordered one on Etsy. Hermes original strap was too short for me but the other one is perfect.
