The Ultimate Bag Guide: Dior Bobby Bag

Everything you need to know about Dior's must-have bag from 2020

One of the biggest bag launches to come out last year was the Dior Bobby which was unveiled by Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior’s Fall 2020 collection. The Dior Bobby infuses timeless modernity with nods to iconic house details. As for the name, Christian Dior’s beloved dog, Bobby, has had his name utilized for numerous looks over time at Dior.

In 2020, many luxury brands added a sleek compact shoulder bag to their offerings but the most popular of this new wave of bags is the Dior Bobby. The Bobby is a structured hobo style bag that is defined by the CD initials that sit atop the buckle on the front of the bag. That buckle features an easy magnetic opening which opens to the half moon shaped interior. The exterior is quite refined, with simple yet elegant curves which allow for this bag to be a classy everyday carry.

Each size (there’s Small, Medium and Large) contains the same design elements as the next, which is nice for uniformity and expectations on a single bag design. The front flap opening reveals the interior main compartment. I should note that the main compartment does not span the entire width of the bag, as the structured leather cuts in a bit on each side to allow the bag to keep its shape and really offer a luxurious saddle bag feel. Once inside, you’ll find a small back pocket, but the larger interior compartment is where I’d store most items. Another nice touch is that the back of the bag has an open pocket that runs the entire width of the design, along with a ’30 Montaigne’ signature embossed in leather sitting halfway between the exterior pocket.

Each Dior Bobby has a removable shoulder strap, some versions coming with a simple leather strap that is adjustable while others have a Dior Oblique embroidered strap. You can always change out the strap to transform this bag into a more personalized version and the removable (and adjustable) shoulder strap also allows this bag to be carried over the shoulder, crossbody or by hand.

As this bag quickly became a Dior staple, the House has continued to release new renditions that vary in material, color, and detailing while continuing to offer the classics as well. Below is a detailed guide to the Dior Bobby including sizes, prices, different materials offered, and celebrities spotted with the bag.

This is a beautiful bag! I love the classic saddle style.

Julia

Thanks for the information, but isn’t this 6 months too late? They’ve released two unimportant bags since then too. (I actually like the Caro, but it’s bound to be drowned by better bags)

We usually wait a bit to release a full guide based on popularity of a bag. After all, not everyone wants all details on a specific bag that no one likes 🙂

I do like the Caro too – we will be reviewing it soon!

Julia

Ah that’s a fair point. Thanks Megs!

I’ve been digging the Oblique Montaigne a lot recently.

And the Oblique Bobby too!

I’ve been loving the Caro and am contemplating getting one in the denim blue. I was going to get the 30M, but the Caro looks like a more classic less boxy version. I also looked at the Bobby and the biggest problem that I have with it is the opening – it’s got the same style of opening as the saddle bag so it makes it difficult to put things easily into the bag because of this “lip” around the edge of the interior. I don’t know why they would put that there as it’s limiting and an inconvenience (Dior seems to be good at the inconvenience thing with the old zipper openings for the Lady Dior – glad they are phasing that out – and, as I mentioned before, the saddle bag interior).

The shape is more “saddle bag” to me as it reminds me of the saddle bags that you see on motorcycles.

Thank you for this guide, I’ve been trying to decide if I want a Bobby and now I feel like I need the medium size!

Victoria

Always enjoy your thorough reviews. And I usually love anything Dior…

I really wanted to like this bag. But i think it was the influencer over saturation that initially piqued my interest, then subsequently drowned it. Nothing wrong with it, just not that special IMO

It’s a nice bag, but I’m not wowed by it.

When Dior first launched the Bobby Bag in Blue Oblique, on the U.S. site, they modeled the large size which I was excited to purchase. When it wasn’t listed for sale I contacted them & was informed “it would not be sold in the U.S.”. This was frustrating since why list a bag they weren’t planning to sell? I liked the medium Bobby, but the interior space was limited so it wouldn’t work for me. I just ordered the 30 Montaigne Chain Bag in Blue Dior Oblique Jacquard since there was more interior space & I liked the chain/leather combination. Hopefully, this will work for me. I looked at the Caro bag, but the width was too small for me.

I didn’t like the bag when I first saw it on YouTube and social media. When I actually saw it in person, I fell for it. It’s a really nice bag, and I could see myself using it as an everyday bag.

What gives me pause is the price. It’s a tad expensive for what it is. Especially since it reminds me of a Marc Jacob’s bag that I already have.

I am loving the new Caro more than the Bobby.

I have this bag and love it! IMO it is easier to use than the Caro, easier to open and close. Love love love it! Plus it’s named after CD’s dog!

Timothy

Nice bag but nothing special.

psny15

I would like this bag is they didn’t have this fake buckle closure – just stop the bag at the cd logo and don’t need this useless extra piece of leather with cheap tacky hardware
