By all accounts, the Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter 2010 runway show was very moving – it began with a video dedicated to the technical skill that goes in to creating the brand’s clothing and ended with an enormous herd of models taking the runway in all manner of black blazers. I can’t think of more fitting bookends to a fashion show in these uncertain times – celebrating craftsmanship and classics seems to be just the note to hit right now.
But what we’re here to talk about is handbags, and those struck a similar chord. Two basic shapes made an appearance: first, the Miss Sicily shape to which the brand has strapped their wagon for the past few season. It came in all manner of textures – leather, python, knit, lace, fur. Those materials were often combined into textural puzzles, but the feeling was mostly a little too similar to last season’s offerings to get me excited. What caught me by surprise, however, was the second shape – tiny coin purse/iPhone case hybrids worn across the body on long chains. They seemed supremely functional and current, while still being exquisitely detailed and luxurious. Modern functionality is something I wish I’d seen a bit more of during recent collections.
I like the little purse coin thingy! I thought it was a necklace at first.

I love the coin purses on the Sicily bags what a wonderful fun and functional detail. I usually don’t like knitted bags, but these are truly beautiful. I like how they have shape and are not slouchy like you see most knit bags. Lastly the small crossbody bags are brilliant and luxurious. Wow they will have a huge seller on their hands. I am already waiting.

No word on a name or price yet – they just debuted a few weeks ago. They’ll be in stores in about six months – Dolce & Gabbana boutiques are probably your best bet when they come out, if you don’t live near one you can probably have one shipped by phone. Nordstrom, Saks and Luisa Via Roma all carry parts of Dolce’s collection online.
Kohl’s was selling similar iPod bags for the minis a few years back. I dunno, I kind of like the concept but I wish the bags were actually a proper size to hold an iPod, even with the extended case thing it looks like an iPod has been shoved into a too-small evening bag.
Have to agree. While I like the vintage coin purse shape and decorations, it looks dumb to have a rectangular shape shoved in the top of it. Please where is the ‘design’ in that !!!
