Fashion Week Handbags: Corto Moltedo Spring 2011

For one reason or another, some designers go absolutely bonkers when it comes time to decorate a simple little box clutch. I’m not sure if it’s because the small proportion lends itself more easily to making big ideas wearable or if the structured feel of the bags makes them easier to decorate intricately, but it seems as though Corto Moltedo Spring 2011 takes note of both of those advantages.

I took the liberty of using the spider clutch as a feature because Halloween is quickly approaching and it’s my favorite holiday, but the motifs you’ll find in this collection are as varied as a summer day is long. From a pale, modernist American flag to sunny painted python to sober forged metal leaves, relative newcomer Moltedo offers a little something for everyone. Everyone who likes a crazy clutch, that is.

A SPIDER bag? There’s no way I’d carry that. I’m terrified of spiders – even big fake ones.

Many of these look more like fall clutches than spring. I like a few of them, but that American flag is tacky.

Lori

Hmm, I am surprised that I like these as much as I do. They are very tastefully adorned. I like the snake bag…

The snake is my favorite. Not a real fan of the spider. It’s a little dark and morbid for my taste.

Merve

The spider clutch reminds me of smthg Alexander McQueen would do. The others are ok eh meh…..

Instead of arguing whether this bag is “nice” or not, perhaps people need to consider the fact that the majority of “designers” ????these days over embellish product because they have no idea what to do. Corto Moltedo is a very good case in point.
Not only does he falsely claim to be the son of the founders of Bottega Veneta (his parents merely “owned” the company 20 yrs after it was founded. In fact they drove it into the ground of the verge of bankruptcy before the Gucci Group bought it and and quickly sacked them all. wise move!) but he also steals designs from BV and anybody else he can. Just amazing how somebody can build a business on what is essentially fraud. I know all of these facts because I am a friend of Corto’s half brother (whose father really founded Bottega Veneta)
