In most arenas—even most arenas within fashion—navy is one of the first neutrals that springs to mind when talking about color. When it comes to leather goods, though, deep blue has always been a little less popular for reasons I don’t really understand. Over the past couple seasons, the idea of a navy bag has really grown on me, so much so that one is on its way to my wardrobe as we speak.
My love of black is well-documented both on this site and within my wardrobe itself, which, oddly enough, is what attracted me to the idea of a navy bag in the first place. The old rule about not wearing black and navy together couldn’t be more outdated—they’re actually a great, super-chic combo that helps you avoid looking like a giant blob of a single shade. (I also like burgundy bags for that reason.)
By that same token, a navy bag would fit in well with most wardrobes. Most people have a neutral that’s their go-to, and whether that’s black, tan, white or gray, navy is a great accompaniment. It’s not “underrated.” Unfortunately navy leather just looks cheap, it’s like a poor man’s black but much harder to do the right shade and look for it to look expensive. In the above list, only All Saints, Prada, and Saint Laurent look like expensive bags, maybe I can add to JW but that’d be a big IFF because it’d depends on how good the leather looks in real life. This is why it’s not popular compared to other neutral colors which are black, beige/nude, brown, and gray. I always love to look at the color but when using it as a clothing item, especially leather, it just looks cheap doesn’t matter how I dress it. If you love the shade and is willing to pay over 1000 dollars for a really nice looking navy bag go for it. Otherwise most of us will pass.
