The Best Overnight Bags for Your Fall 2020 Road Trips

Heading out of town? We've got you covered at every budget

For many of us, life looks a lot different than it did a year ago. Dinners out mean bundling up and powering our way through chilly outdoor dining sessions, trips to our favorite stores are much more calculated and less spontaneous than before and seeing family and friends requires advanced notice and plans to ensure the highest level of safety.

Of course, traveling is one of the luxuries (though sometimes necessities) that has drastically changed in the last 7 months. Many people are foregoing air travel for road trips or weekend staycations and the fall season just so happens to be the best time of year for a quick getaway. I would like to have a nice carry-on (overnight) bag but hesitate to spend the money. I have been on several flights that make you check even your carry-on and wonder if the bags can hold up well being thrown around by the airline crew.

I often travel with my LV Keepall 45, which is durable, but also small enough that I can fit it in front of my seat on flights!

I have two bags that I specifically use for travel — the Longchamp expandable Le Pliage listed here is one. I purchased it as a study abroad student and have had it for 10 years! It’s been everywhere—on planes and on trains, subways and of course on road trips. It has held up incredibly well. I also use an LV Neverfull as my second carry on piece for flight travel (pre-COVID). I find the coated canvas to hold up so well even after being shoved under the seat in front of me ect. If I had the budget and the need I would consider a larger LV canvas piece. After all the material was invented for travel!

Get Beis! Those bags can honestly go through the ringer and they look perfect. Plus they’re really practical and gorgeous! I have so many high end designer overnight bags and nothing compares to Beis. The zippers are The smoothest I’ve ever seen as well lol

These are gorgeous. Lo&Sons is also a lovely low key travel brand. I love the Lo&Sons Catalina Deluxe for a casual overnight/carry-on and the Lo&Sons OMG as my personal item for business trips.

I’m surprised these weren’t mentioned. I know not a purse brand, but they are the best! $195-$325

Rareform has some fun bags that can work for overnights or carryons. They are made of recycled billboard material, so the designs are fun and the material is pretty durable. I used their Maya bag last weekend for a quick overnight stay. rareform.com

You guys really should’ve added Beis to the list. Super affordable but also very practical and beautifully made. I actually have preferred their overnight bags to my longchamp one!

Maybe it’s just me… but nobody should be taking a road trip while the US is seeing a huge surge in Covid-19 cases. Protect your family and your community: stay home, wear a mask when you have to go out, and wash your hands!

In the US, there is no travel ban in place. What works for you and I, may be different for the next person or family. I know a lot of people that have been doing small getaways, driving a few hours away and staying at a hotel for a few nights. I do believe it is up to all of us to be safe and decide on what is best for ourselves and our families. I know some people want to go see family and friends as well, and as the holiday season is upon us, there will be more traveling by car to do so.

Of course people should be safe! Wash your hands, wear your masks, practice social distancing. I’m not making a statement on what should be done by each person, because there is no stay home order in place, so some people are wanting to see family or go somewhere for a few days. I do hope we all continue to make smart decisions to keep everyone safe and healthy!

A road trip is basically one of the few ways of travelling safer than other ways of travel. That’s what we did for summer vacay; we drove over 1000 km up to Lapland, rented a chalet and spent our days doing hikes and site seeing. We didn’t stay at a hotel on the way, and avoided contact when picking up food on the road.
The situation has been a lot better in Finland than in the US f.e. but the same rules have applied here as well.

Posts like this remind us that there is also a life after covid. Let’s hope we get a vaccine ASAP and life will get more back to normal. In the mean time, we need things that will keep our minds occupied.
Stay strong everybody, things will get better!

Doesn’t apply just to the US – I’m in Canada -and the same rule applies

Cindi

I’m obviously in the minority, but why is there such an overall preference for carryon/overnight bags vs. suitcases? The price points for most of these is mind boggling, too.

Amazona

A soft bag is just easier in every way. Most of the time I keep the bag on the back seat or, if I can fit it, in the leg room (I sit on the front seat so there’s room) for easy access to everything. If I need something from the bag, all I have to do is open a zipper. Suitcases are a bit tough to wrangle and I tend to avoid using one if I can.
The price points in this post vary nicely and there’s something for everyone. My favorite weekender is an Adrienne Vittadini that I bought preloved in pristine condition for 60 €, but I also have a Lumi Supermarket that retails for around 400€. The LV and Gucci are in a ridiculous price point IMO but if then again, there are people that consider paying a few thousand dollars for a bag very reasonable and I have no problem with that. If you don’t enjoy high end, enjoy the contemporary offerings. =)

Seriously? An article about overnight bags for road trips in the midst of a pandemic when people being urged to stay home and not have social gatherings. Incredibly tone deaf.

I responded below, but right now in the US there is no stay home order in place. I am not saying what I think should be in place, I am not an expert, so what I do is make the best decision for my family. But, I know many people want to see loved ones they haven’t seen in months or want a small getaway so they are doing that in a way they feel is safe. This is a post dedicated to that, because it is what is working for some people right now.

Of course we find safety and health to be of the utmost importance as well 🙂

Dave

Kaitlin I love your post but I think the Loewe tote is a kind of bag different to the other bags in this post. (Perhaps Puzzle XL or Elephant tote bag).
