Love It or Leave It: Saint Laurent’s All Over Monogram Canvas

Designers just can't get enough of the logo love, but have you had enough?

Hedi Slimane departed Saint Laurent over 3 years ago, and until recently, Saint Laurent still looked nearly identically to the Slimane-era Saint Laurent. Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello has worked to put his own spin on the brand, and little by little Vaccarello’s touches have trickled out. For the last decade or more, Saint Laurent’s bags have been easily identifiable due to the brand’s iconic YSL logo. This season Vaccarello has take the logo love to new heights with the introduction of an all over logo monogram canvas. These new designs won’t come as a shock to many, as the logo obsession has reached new heights in 2019. However is Saint Laurent late to the party with this release? Has the logo love reached its peak?

Saint Laurent’s monogram canvas print features mini ‘YSL’ logos inside diamond shapes alternating between upside down and rightsize up. The bags are made of 100% cotton and trimmed in leather, though it’s unclear if the canvas is coated (similar to Louis Vuitton’s coated canvas), as we’ve yet to see these bags in person. Currently, the logo canvas is available in three shapes, a classic camera bag, a bucket bag, and a saddle bag. Do you love the logo print or would you leave it?

I…weirdly like it more than I thought I would. It kind of looks like a nebulous polo pony design from a distance (a la Ralph Lauren) and then you have an “aha” moment as you squint and realize it’s YSL.

If it’s coated cotton I could actually live with it. Wouldn’t pay YSL prices myself, but I wouldn’t have a visceral hate reaction like I have been with Hedi Slimane’s doings at Céline.

Sanzy

That was my exact thought! I thought it was a RL bag too

What C said! …I kind of like it, much more than I thought I would!

I think it’s a less gaudy way to use the recognizable (and beautiful) YSL logo than those large, gold colored decorations that “takes over” so many of their designs.

I should clarify, I like the aestethic as it looks summery and casual, remins me of a fun strawbag, but more “luxurious” and foremost more durable! Very wearable!

But, the fact that this is not an “old pattern with a history” puts me off a little as it gives of a “tryhard”/”copy cat” feel. It sounds silly but that’s where my mind goes. I am also unsure about if this print will have the same timeless feel as the GG Supreme, Lv monogram and Dior Oblique has, in years to come. But who knows, maybe in it will just be seen as “one of the classics” in the future. After all they were all new at some point. I wonder this as the “old” and “vintage” feeling of the logo prints is what makes me attracted to Them. Especially the GG and the Oblique. The I don’t care for LV or Goyard at all, not the MCM or whatever it is called either.(aestethic/color reasons)

Could someone who is educated about the old logo prints give some info on what each of thems first year of premiere are, etc? That would be interesting! PURSEBLOG, maybe? 🙂

Oh and the Fendi FF monogram, I used to think that it was ugly, now I love it…. I feel fooled by fashion! ?

Sally

This! Marketing is brainwashing us! I hated, but now love the Fendi monogram, too! “)

Unnecessary move! If I want a logo canvas bag, I ll got to Louis Vuitton, Goyard, or Gucci (historic houses with heritage logo/monogram canvases or prints). Kering is really struggling to maintain a clear story about the YSL brand. This is just lazy: an obvious pandering to those trying to upgrade from Michael Kors bags.

Basically the legacy of Yves Saint Laurent has been trashed with the new designs

SK

It’s a nope from me.

FashionableLena

I would need to see these in person. In those pictures, they look scheap.

Sparky

eeeeew

Cea

Not interested. I feel that they borrow too much from Gucci diamanté, L.V. and other’s, but this looks cheap. Also, not even any original shapes. YSL can do so much better!

crescent

Why drop the Yves if they continue to use the YSL logo for Saint Laurent?

Bryan Lepe

Not a fan of the upside down logo? Weird. This gives me a headache.

psny15

this gives me a headache too LOL

Polkadotbird

On a tangent, I’m sad that Chanel’s camelia logo print hasn’t really gone anywhere.

JH

Nope.

It’s like a visit to a flea market in 1986….

Julie Porowski

on point!

Maya

God knows I’m totally YSL obsessed but nope it’s a pass…

Aliza Zibkoff

Love the classic shapes HATE the logo pattern. That’s about as simple as it get.

Jettsam

I don’t mind it why not

kemilia

The logos look like dead squished bugs.

Sc factor

Yeeeaaaa i don’t know if it’s the color combination but this is totally missing the mark for me. sorry YSL not a fan at all.

Rashida

Not a fan to be honest…

Cbo9710

Huge YSL fan, big disappointment.

Yolennie

ewww

sdaniels

The bucket bag is definitely a winner! I love it!

Julie Porowski

I’m buying more canvas bags these days to try and reduce my use of leather, so I like the material, but the print just doesn’t do anything for me. Agree with other posters here, I’ll stick with logos from LV, Goyard, Gucci and Fendi.

L Ingram

Definitely a no for me. In fact any canvas bag that isn’t coated is a recipe for disaster and a waste of money in my opinion especially in this light color.

Nas

Heeeeell no.

Adele

Looks like flattened mosquitoes got stuck on to the bags. Yuck!

paris1278

skip it

Looks like something you might find at a Salvation Army store
