The Dior Runway Bag was the first big accessory debut of the post-Raf Simons era at Dior (on the runway, as the name would suggest), and I was, admittedly, a little suspicious of it. That was at least partly because of my immense affection for the bags created during Simons’s tenure at the legendary French design house and sadness over his voluntary departure, but it was also motivated by the bag’s proportions and how out of place it seemed with current trends. A couple months on, it’s starting to grow on me.
The bag, as you can see, is essentially a Lady Dior Bag made squat and long, which is similar to how Jean-Paul Gaultier changed the proportions of the Birkin to create the JPG Shoulder Birkin during his time at Hermès. Instead of converting the top handles into longer shoulder straps, though, the Runway Bag employs a separate, wide shoulder strap that is long enough to make the bag a true shoulder bag, but not long enough for shoulder carry. That strap, and the fact that the top handles fold down entirely to the bag’s sides, are what have brought me around.
The shape still feels a little awkward to me, likely because no one else is doing it right now, but there’s something to be said for a willingness to get away from the saddle bags and chain-strap flap bags that have dominated store shelves for seasons. Sometimes a new thing only feels weird until your eyes get used to it, but sometimes that apprehension persists forever–the only way to know which way I’ll ultimately go on the Runway Bag is to wait and see, but the ultra-embellished versions available now are gorgeous to look at.
In this case of Love It or Leave It, I’m unable to take a side until I have further information. Which way would you go?
I’m not sure about the shape. I do like however that the Dior charm is no longer metal, but adopts the color of the bag. Much, much, MUCH better. The ornaments are interesting and I kind of like them… I think.
Is this a wannabe clutch? And then it has an optional strap for… your elbow? The bag doesn’t know what it wants to be. I love Dior but i’m leaving this one out on the interstate
Amazing embroidery. I’d be scared to wear it with anything knit though.
I find this bag confusing. The bulky handles and large charm read “casual”, but the embroidery is more of a nighttime option, no matter how many magazines show sequins for day. All in all, it seems out of proportion to me. Pass.
I had to stare at it for a long time, but I think I like it. The lush embroidery on some of the bags makes them little wearable works of art.
I prefer the original Lady Dior. Definitely not my taste.
Dior turned the Lady into a dachshund. Love the designs, but not the wiener dog shape.
HEH!
You made me laugh so much.
Leave it….
Leave it..not sure what they were thinking!
Dior is always pretty but the shape bothers me, just like the JPG birkin has always looked odd to me. I applaud them for trying something different though.
lady dior’s my favourite but I have to leave this one.
this is just so whimsical and fun – not sure if its a clutch or an arm bag or a shoulder bag
<3
With the right size, the bag may work. With the right length, that strap may work. But so far, they’re all too cramped together under the arm pit and with the structure of the bag, it’s not really pretty in the long run. I’m not buying it now until they can figure out the right one.
Leather ones are beautiful. Beaded ones are too antique-ish to me. Remind me of a pillbox hat and gloves worn with a tweed suit,
Definitely leave, first I’ve never liked that bag to start with but, did they cut it in half, it’s the feeling I get looking at it! NEXT!
Some things are better left to the runway.
That’s pretty disturbing because when I first looked at the picture on top of the article, with the charms and all, it was as if the bag had two enormous eyes directly staring at me. This bag looks fierce.
But I like the embellished versions, although yes, it’s a bit like the dachshund’s shape.
I saw one today at the Dior boutique and it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. But still think the strap is too wide.
I can’t handle this bag. I love bags of all shapes and sizes (mostly), but this reminds me of the baguette craze of the early 2000s, and that’s an era of fashion that should NEVER return.
I’d be all over this bag if it were a clutch…unfortunately, it’s not and therefore, leave it.
