For Celine’s Spring 2020 Bags, Hedi Slimane Focuses On Its Triomphe Logo

The 'C' bag was noticeably absent this season

Paris Fashion Week may be over but we’re still catching up on detail images from fashion’s most anticipated collections, and today we’re taking a look at Hedi Slimane’s latest bags for Celine. It was just last year at this time that Slimane made his runway debut for the designer. Fans of the brand were introduced to a brand new Celine, and now a year later it seems that Slimane has found his footing, choosing to focus on new designs and a new direction for the brand. This season, Slimane took us back in time, introducing bohemian designs, reminiscent of a Parisian girl from the 60s and 70s. Bags featured suede, fringe, buckles and tapestry prints.

There was no sign of the Celine C bag on the runway, but rather Slimane chose to focus largely on the logo introduced on the brand’s Triomphe bag. The logo appeared in many different iterations on the Spring 2020 runway, and though the classic Triomphe bag did appear, a brand new bag was introduced as well. Called the Chain Maillon Trimomphe this new shape appeared in a few different versions. There were beautiful exotics and even a suede fringe version, indicating that this bag is going to be a big push for the brand come 2020. Another notable new shape, called the Camarat Bag was introduced, which posses an effortless Parisian-bohemian vibe. Shaped like a half moon with a belt buckle like closure, this saddle bag appeared in hair calf, smooth leather and printed fabric versions. The bags as a whole possess an effortlessly casual vibe, which is an interesting direction for Slimane to take, coming off of his first design for the brand, the Celine 16 bag, which was more structured and a bit dressier.

Everything looks so forecfully old and grandmaesque…?

One of the versions of the new logos also looks like the Valentino logo seen om their newest bags! (The golden V in the oval) One looks like a bad copy of the other…

Hedi tries so hard to be something he is not here… And it shows. Nothing looks genuine or authentic.

I just want to add that this is, although bad, still better than his first collection, which was absolutely horrifying for a fan of Philos work at Celine, like myself.

But it is too obvious that he is trying to wash away his teen-heroine chic-aura that he got so criticized for in the first round. I just don’t “believe him” when I see this collection. I don’t think he even likes this himself, he is just trying to please the audience.

I like these! The tan reptile one is gorgeous. I do like their new Triomphe canvas that they’re featuring this fall. Can you cover the Spring 2020 Versace bags? I like the new hardware that was shown.

It’s like a Gucci Celine collection. And it’s not good. I can’t believe how much different Celine is now. It is heartbreaking.

Lola

He is doing the same thing he did with YSL.
YSL bags used to have an identity before Hedi made Chanel & Hermès bags with a YSL logo.

WEST LEE

I see some Chole, Gucci & Loewe.
It seems that the brand has lost his footing.

Giselle

I even see Michael Kors.

Sara Megías

Actually he was Celine’s creative designer before Philo was, but i think only in clothing. I only like Philo’s era bags … non other designer fill the void to me till today

Gemmabella de la russo

I too cringed when I saw the Celine “loewe” tote…

WEST LEE

Yea. Couldn’t be just replace the logo!!

Fingers crossed.

Katrina

I was just about to say the same thing. Chloe from the fringe, Loewe from the wicker/rattan pieces, Gucci from the horsebit and leather-trimmed fabric bags. There is also a bit of Mansur Gavriel in the shape of the bags in #10 and #13. It’s not that the bags are bad, per se, but it’s just that we’ve seen them before and arguably done better.

psny15

50 shades of bad

Maybol Helium

Sorry, I fell asleep.

Wing Hei

Just so uninspiring

Sparky

Pathetic.
The new designs make the old designs look fresh and new.

WEST LEE

Please correct me if i am wrong!!
I see Celine X Gucci horsebit.

FashionableLena

These handbags just look dated.

W S M

This is very, very Vintage Celine. The horsebit is not unique to Gucci. Certainly, Hermes is also known for incorporating it as a design motif, particularly in their jewelry and scarves.

Yawn

Did anyone even like vintage Celine? Was Celine ever a thing before Phoebe Philo?

California Girl

Unimaginative and really boring! How does a designer take a fashion house, at the top of their game, to the gutters so quickly? Hopefully, one day this brand will recover since, to date, I have yet to see anything worth purchasing.

Jay

Is this Celine or Gucci??
For the love of the sweet baby Jesus, please bring back Phoebe!!!

Passerine

They’re….ok. Not worth a premium price tag and shouldn’t be carrying a premium designer label. The tan saddle bag styles remind me of vintage Coach from the 1970s — back when Coach hadn’t yet sold out their American artisans and off-shored production to cheap Asian factories. The best I could say about this collection is that if you had a time machine taking you back to 1978, most of these would fit right in. But Polene’s new Numero Sept is fresher, more appealing and will cost about 1000 euros less. https://www.polene-paris.com/collections/numero-sept

Aliza Zibkoff

Not loving the logo. Looks like a Celine knocking of Chanel.

Megan

For the most part, I think these are beautiful, classic, and understated. If one showed up in my closet, particularly #7, I’m sure I would use it. But nothing stands out and makes me want to buy it over all of the other pretty bags on the market.

Divadeluxnyc

I see Coach when I look at these bags. And the “C Celine” bag is already gone? Lame

MademoiselleConnasse

I like many of these bags for their classic shapes but I could do with smaller logo hardware and without the horsebit, which at this point is 100% owned by Gucci in everyone’s imagination.

Irene

Chloe/Tory Burch?

Ruth Anzalone

snooze

Biogirl

Sigh. These could be anyone’s bags, so everyday. You used to really know a Céline at first glance—a work of unique art. Now, just following the herd. No originality. (But I love the jacket in #37!)

Laurie kucic

Is it safe to say that Celine is passable for now? I think these are not pretty and not special in anyway. The years of the luggage, phantom and trapeze are long in the past, and these show no signs of being a must have anytime soon.

gt66

Celine used to be my favorite. Now it’s just gross.

chae

why does he keep getting hired by these luxury houses??? He is not creative at all! he just regurgitate the same thing

kathrin9674

Tory Burch, is it you? Why did you collaborate with Coach, then? And WHEN?

Eun

The clothes are looking a little more interesting than his rockstar at a funeral looks. But his bags are still so uninspired (not to mention “borrowed” from other brands – Chloe, Loewe, Gucci to name a few influences. Heck, one of the bags looks like it was lifted straight from the Gucci runway.

Boring.

Alfred Bennet

The metal logo looks like a bottle opener.

Marian

Why would they put #29 (bucket bag) on the runway when it’s so obviously scratched? Is this a prototype and they don’t have others that they can use?
