Love It or Leave It: Celine Triomphe Canvas

Would you wear it?

While brands like Louis Vuitton and Goyard are known for their iconic coated canvas, when it comes to Celine’s handbags, the brand’s DNA is rooted in its leather goods. However like many brands Celine has experimented with coated canvas bags and its latest line revamps the brand’s canvas offerings.

Tapping into its rich history, like past coated canvas designs from Celine, the canvas features a repetitive Triomphe logo print. Vintage designs from the brand feature a similar print, but on a smaller scale. The Triomphe logo is rooted in Celine’s history and is tied to founder Céline Vipiana. Vipiana’s car broke down in Paris, right in front of the Arc de Triomphe, and she was instantly inspired by the chain that surrounds the iconic French monument.

The inside of the double links represent two Cs and Celine’s founder began using the emblem on bags, jewelry and prints like this one. The iconic house motif has since been reimagined by creative director Hedi Slimane, appearing throughout Celine’s newest collections. This includes a line of printed coated canvas bags, appropriately called Triomphe Canvas.

The Triomphe Canvas bags are made from printed coated canvas with calfskin trimmings and a fabric interior lining. There are various sizes and silhouettes offered in this line, and truthfully I like it. I adore the vintage vibe of the brown printed canvas and cognac leather trim (though there are white and grey trim options too). Additionally, I find coated canvas to be incredibly durable, and though I don’t own a bag from this line specifically, I imagine it will hold up well. Personally, I’d steer away from the CELINE printed versions, and my favorite from the line is definitely the Medium Folco Bag. There’s something about the shape of the Folco bag that carries the vintage-y Triomphe print so well.

Yes. I have the triomphe canvas bucket and I ansilutely love it!

Starrynight

Ooh I was eyeing the bucket! Which size did you get? Glad to hear you love it!

KangKangKang

Really like the vintage vibe.

Kaitlin Serio

I completely agree!

Passerine

Yes, except actual vintage bags from Celine (like the ones shown in last week’s vintage bags post) are more attractive, seem better made, and cost less. My money is on real vintage rather than faux vintage.

Morgan

I have the folco and LOVE it. It’s feels both modern and vintage-y.

Megan

Nothing about these bags says they’re distinctly Celine except for the logo. Take off the logo and I’d peg them as a Dooney and Burke knockoffs.

Ed

Yeah for a second I thought the wrong images were uploaded and I was in a Macy’s discount aisle or something.

I wonder why they didn’t try to revive the macadam print? I have a vintage Celine in macadam, and I much prefer it to the new triomphe canvas. Would’ve been nice to see it revived in new styles.

I just ordered the Ava bag..love the shape and versatile colour

rebecca

i say leave it. feels contrived/off-brand for celine to be jumping on the bandwagon.

Sibel

Oh dear god no

The main reason I like(d) Celine was because they were not a logo heavy brand. This goes against everything that I consider their aesthetic.

These are really boring shapes. I have had old vintage Coach bags similar to all of them except they were made with better materials.

S

these look like they’re from Kohls.

Charlotte

I really like these! They look fresh, new and exciting!

Charlie

Hate it…

I can’t unsee this now. Thanks. Just got the small Boston bag…I’ve purchased two of the new wide, striped canvas straps to mix with other bags but otherwise, haven’t bought new Celine (I have five Phoebe bags). I wanted the ease of canvas and try to stay away from LV. I was not a fan of this canvas when it was first released but it’s grown on me and I think the Boston is chic in the small size (also liked the Folco but I can’t with that closure). I came on to see what other people think — you all have me second guessing! Know I’m responding to a year-old post…is everyone still feeling this way?

Jenn

the print on the small boston is really growing on me and i’m seriously considering getting one. it’ll be my first Celine purchase.

agreed, the print is definitely more subtle than LV’s, and the shape + tan color makes gives that vintage, timeless vibe. but at the same time, i’m not a big fan of monogram canvas and I wonder if the price is justified…

Kat

I‘m not! I have been super hesitant about printed canvas in general, would never buy LV and like many on here, have loved and bought Celine because they don’t rely on big logos, but design bags that can stand on their own. So imagine my surprise when I stepped into a Celine store today (looking for something entirely different), saw the canvas in real life for the first time and immediately felt drawn to it. I really, really like it, and agree with you that the canvas goes well with the Boston bag. Did you get the dark or the light version? Am seriously considering a light bucket for the summer now… So I‘d say keep the bag, it’s very different from other monogram bags and imo seems way less flashy than LV and other canvas options out there!

Can we not try to make celine logo a thing ?

I didnt like it when MK did it and I dont like it now. Celine should stick with leather bags
