Celebrity Campaigns Have a Hold On Me

Jennifer, Gigi, Emma, oh my!

I’ve always been a sucker for a good campaign. The first campaign that had an influence on me was Lindsay Lohan for Dooney and Bourke in 2004. The brand featured her as the face of their campaign the same year “Mean Girls” was released, and the result was a sea of Dooney and Bourke bags on the arms of all the girls in my high school. The bags weren’t necessarily my favorite design, but I begged my mom to get me one for my birthday because true to Mean Girls fandom, I saw Cady Heron wearing a Dooney and Bourke handbag, so I bought a Dooney and Bourke handbag.

I was too young to understand the effects of marketing at the time, but now as an adult I am constantly aware of the celebrities that act as the face of my favorite brands. When Marc Jacobs announced the return of his grunge line earlier this month, I didn’t expect to find anything I wanted to buy since grunge isn’t in line with my usual aesthetic. But when the Grunge Line Redux campaign launched and I saw Gigi Hadid at the forefront, I gravitated towards the collection’s effortlessly cool style.

My favorite actress, Jennifer Lawrence, is another example of a celebrity that has positively influenced my opinion of a brand. Dior. I’ve been admiring her partnership with Dior ever since she donned her beautiful pink Dior Couture gown to the Oscar’s in 2012, and six years later her campaign for the 2019 Cruise Collection has me gushing over several Dior pieces.  I don’t own anything from the brand yet, but I constantly find myself perusing their website as a direct result from seeing Jennifer’s ads. In fact, I love many of the Dior faces–Charlize Theron, Marion Cotillard, Natalie Portman. All of these women exude sophistication and grace, drawing me to the brand. The more I look at shots from the campaign, the more I want a Dior of my own, and I know it is only a matter of time before I bring one home.

Emma Stone is another actress who is slowly changing my tastes. With the launch of her Louis Vuitton campaign debut, “The Spirit of Travel”, I quickly fell in love with a few bags (as well as developing a bad case of wanderlust). I own several Louis Vuittons, all monogram coated canvas, but this campaign has successfully added some leather Louis Vuitton pieces to my wish list.  I am seriously lusting after the Capucines after seeing it look oh so perfect on Emma, leading me to “add bag to cart” over and over since I first saw the campaign.

Selena Gomez for Coach has made me rethink the way I look at Coach. I had strayed away from Coach over the last few years, but when her new line was announced, I promptly went to their site and picked out a few of my favorites since I am a big fan of Selena’s music and style. Coach is a brand that I don’t find myself shopping often, but I have to say that has changed since they announced their collaboration with Selena Gomez, just proving that a celebrity campaign really can influence me to shop a brand or product!

Lucy, it looks like we are missing a word in the paragraph about Emma Stone: “I quickly fell in love a few bags.”

Megs Mahoney Dusil

Fixed it!! Thanks for spotting it 🙂

Katy ;P

I love these campaigns. They are so artistic! Emma Stone has added a completely new dimension to LV.

Olivia

This campaign really had the opposite effect on me! I know that I do love the bag, but Emma makes it look so freaking ugly in my eyes! Haha. Am I the only one who thinks the bag is styled in a horrible way in these adds? I mean, I don’t blame Emma for it, she’s beautiful, but this bag+ styling+person combo is not working. It doesn’t look like Emma loves that bag with those outfits. It just doesn’t go together. It looks like she’s just holding her friend’s or mom’s bag while the person who is REALLY owning the bag is geting ready or something.

Darietta

I do agree Emma doesn’t look like someone who uses their bags.

Belle

Selena Gomez has done wonders for Coach. I think Jennifer Lawrence is a mismatch for Dior.

?4ladyfox

No kidding! I need to take a new look at Coach, now!

Darietta

How so?

Belle

I think she lacks class.

H

i assume you must have been horrified at Dior sponsoring Chiara Ferragni’s wedding dress then. That was a low point for the brand imo.

I’m neutral on JLaw in general and agree with the other poster that she’s a bit out of sync, but she has a heck lot more class and talent than Chiara.

Bring back Marion!

Eve

No opinion on JLaw, but I think Dior as of late lacks class. What’s up with the giant logos…

Sparky

Totally.

May

Yep ads do brim me up with excitement, but not necessarily to add a bag to my want list. I like seeing the narrative they come up with around the celeb they chose. Jlaw seems a bit of a mismatch cause her personality so does not fit with Diors poshiness, at least to me.

?4ladyfox

Yes, but they had to do something to reach the younger crowd – they were getting a little stodgy, after the death of Lady (princess) Diana. She WAS a walking advertising campaign for Dior! She was exquisite!

Ingri

What? On the RC J.Law and Dior is the worst pairing I’ve ever seen.

Vicky

I don’t. But now that I see this article, I like the last bag Selena is holding. ?

Yoshi1296

J Law is so overhyped she doesn’t fit in with Dior at all. I don’t like Dior with her as an ambassador. The best is Charlize Theron and Marion Cotillard, but they don’t really fit Maria Grazia Chiuri’s aesthetic.

Sparky

Celebs killed the campaign. Before celebs invaded the modeling world the fashion concept drove the campaign and a models were booked to express the concept. It seems the other way around now. Just throw the celeb du jour in front of a camera and you have a “campaign”. No thanks. Doesn’t inspire me.

Elle

emma and selena look terrible. hope they’re okay.

Sheila (Maddy Loves)

Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior dress was for the 2013 Oscars, not 2012. I like Jennifer Lawrence but she’s not super in sync with Dior as a brand ambassador. I looooooved the Marion Cotillard Dior days, not necessarily the ads but she is so quintessentially Dior. Too bad she was dropped for much younger celebrities (Cara Delevingne for Dior anti-aging skincare… anyone?), because they don’t know how to carry the brand like Marion.

?4ladyfox

You know, it gets very tiresome to see Cara Delevingne on EVERY fashion brand! As a woman fighting wrinkles as a 50 something, it is downright disgusting & highly insulting when they use a 20 something to sell an anti-wrinkle cream! Right?
