You guys know that we don’t like to feature cell phone photos in our posts on the regular – the Internet is a visual medium, after all, and so is fashion – but we thought that you’d want to see this bag immediately. To our knowledge, this is the only photo circulating of The Row’s Fur Backpack, and it comes straight from the Twitter account of Barneys Fashion Director Amanda Brooks.
Pre-Fall 2011 shows and presentations are going on right now, so odds are that this bag will be hitting stores with those collections in a few months. I have precious little other information – price and availability are still a mystery, but with the normally elevated prices for fur bags and the astronomical $34,000 price tag for The Row’s Alligator Backpack, I’d suspect a price in excess of $20,000. Why, you ask? I’m just picking random numbers that seem excessively high, which seems to be The Row’s chosen handbag pricing strategy, even for something that looks as ill-advised as this bag. (Say what you want about the prices of The Row’s other bags, they were all immaculately designed. This one? Not so much.) Care to enter a guess? Check out the full-size picture, after the jump. Seasons come and seasons go, but in the fashion world, Celine is still the must-have bag for people who are interested in a bag’s must-haveness. The brand only has one US boutique at the moment …

It seems as though Kanye West‘s recent advent to Twitter has been mighty controversial – some people think he’s hysterical, some people think he tweets too much, and still others have yet to get over that whole Taylor Swift thing. I find myself residing firmly in the first group, and the only thing that surprises me in the least about his account is that he hasn’t had one all along. Twitter was made for Kanye West.
In between telling us that he jogs in Lanvin and imploring us to check out his “credenza game,” Yeezy actually managed to tweet a picture that you guys might be interested in – the vintage Hermes travel bag above. The handle looks a bit worse for the wear, but I’m digging the distressing on the rest of the bag and how aged the leather is. If you have any information on the name of this model or the year it might have been made, let us know in the contents – Kanye, naturally, was short on details.
Mondays are always a bit sluggish. It doesn’t matter if you had a raging weekend or simply hung around, I don’t know many people who really look forward to Mondays. However, today is a bit different. We’re partnering with handbag designer Zara Terez to bring you an entire week of giveaways! (more…)
The Internet and luxury have always been sort of mutually exclusive. The Internet is broad, democratic, and welcomes all kinds; it has changed the way that consumers interact with corporations in fundamental ways that are constantly evolving. Luxury brands are narrow, elitist, and target a very specific clientele. They require a bit of mystery and aloofness in order to be aspirational and make their traditional brand identities work, and they’re generally not interested in changing how their companies interact with…well, anyone. “The way it has always been done” is idealized and worshiped in an almost religious way, and even though many below-the-surface practices have evolved in recent years (most notably, manufacturing), the way that brands want you to perceive them has remained largely untouched for decades.
But the problem with this whole Internet thingamabob is that it’s kind of insidious and it’s changing the way that people of a variety of incomes and social standings shop and inform themselves about potential purchases. Fashion shows are no longer private events for an elite group of celebrities, editors, and clients; they’re presentations of goods that can often be seen in their entirety by average customers within minutes of their completion. There may be exclusivity left in the invitation to attend a show, but not in the information that one gains by attending. (more…)
