Pauric Sweeney is well known for his beautiful and continued use of python in the bag line that bears his name, and his are consistently some of the most interesting and useful snakeskin bags on the market. He dabbled mostly in neutrals for spring although he does do brilliant brights from time to time, and the bag that caught my attention immediately was the Pauric Sweeney Shiny Python Crossbody.
Naturally, my first attraction was to the expertly finished python skin, which Sweeny consistently manages to make shine in a way that few other designers do. But after the initial “OOOH SHINY OBJECT” reaction wore off, I started to wonder: is this the type of bag I would actually use? (more…)
You hear that? I’m swooning. Pretty hard. I’m a bit desensitized to beautiful handbags in the same way that I imagine fashion photographers are desensitized to beautiful women – when you look at them all day from a business perspective, it’s can be kind of hard to recapture the feeling of excitement that they once gave you. Well, folks, the Pauric Sweeney Metallic Python Shoulder Bag has me giddy like a schoolgirl all over again. How could it not? The charms of this particular purse are so many and varied that I barely know where to start. (more…)
We’ve featured several non-leather clutches in the past few days that have had price tags north of two grand, and commenters seem displeased at such prices for bags that aren’t made out of some kind of animal-derived material. Well! We certainly don’t want anyone to be displeased, so I present for your consideration the Pauric Sweeney Tullio Lizard Clutch.
It’s made almost entirely of exotic lizard skin, it has clean, architectural lines, and the combination of neutral colors would go with a variety of nighttime looks. At only slightly more than $1000 for all of that, the price sounds positively fair when looked at in comparison with the clutches we’ve written about recently. (more…)
So, the 1980s throwback trend is, like, a thing. I get that. I’m even a moderate supporter of it, when done correctly. The 80s were a time of excess and fashion-forwardness and questionable taste, and everyone loves that, right? Right. Except when it’s done like the Pauric Sweeney Padded Patchwork Top Handle, I don’t love it. At all. Not even a little. It kind of makes my eyes hurt to look at it. This isn’t just a winking reference to 80s ridiculousness – this is taking something that was already fug back then and making it more fug and more expensive 25 years later. And I, for one, am not fooled and not impressed. In order to do “retro” correctly, a designer has to somehow make it sleeker and more modern than it was to begin with, and there’s nothing about this bag that looks updated in the least. It wasn’t cute then, and it’s not cute now, sadly; it’s a retro-gone-wrong monstrosity. Even if this bag was given to me for free, I sincerely doubt I would wear it to anything but a costume party. Yesterday I wrote about a bag with tons of fringe. This feature seemed to get everyone talking quite a bit, so when I saw the Pauric Sweeney Ryder Python Bag, I figured we could keep the conversation going. As I mentioned before, I like fringe in small quantities, so the fringe on this bag is much more up my alley. But, I’m going to talk a bit about the bag itself first – I absolutely love it. The gold python leather is without a doubt a head turner. Colors can sometimes look dirty or warn out, but this gold looks nothing but shinny and new (which to me, is what the color of a new bag should look like). Speaking of colors, I absolutely love that the gold python skin is partnered with a brown leather shoulder strap and accents. The woven detailing on the shoulder strap continues to add flare and a sense of craftsmanship to the bag. And of course, that leads me back to the fringe. I love the amount of fringe on the bag. It seems like just enough flare to add a little something special to the bag. When working with gold python leather, I feel that there is a fine line when adding detailing and accessories to the bag. If you add too much the bag could seem cluttered or busy, but too little and the bag could seem unfinished or even boring. Pauric Sweeney got this bag right. They found the perfect combination of flare and class. Couldn’t you see yourself carrying just as much during the day as you might in the evening? To me, the bag is a total hit: gorgeous material, amazing color, fabulous flare and of course, plenty of room for the things I must have with me when I leave the house. The Pauric Sweeney Python Shoulder Bag has been a hit handbag long before the likes of Lindsay Lohan carried it (in my book anyway). There is something so overly simple yet intriguing about the Pauric Sweeney Overnight Bag. But the simplicity is what defines the bag, leaving the exotic black python skin to do all the talking. The brown leather handles with oversized stitching somehow add the perfect finishing touch. The handbag seems too easy but this is what makes it great. Sometimes all the extra add-ons are not needed and distract from an otherwise beautiful bag.
