Like fringe and studs, chain detailing is another trend that’s losing steam fast. It’s more likely to stay around than the other two because of the functional natural of chain straps, but chain as a design element can get a little boring. Until now, that is.

The Antik Batik Anka 1 Shoulder Bag puts fine-gage chain to creative use with an incredibly intricate chain-covered flap that goes a long way toward jazzing up what might be a boring suede hobo otherwise. If more designers were this creative with how they implemented trends (even slightly stale ones), my job would be a whole lot easier. (more…)

How do you feel about bead work on a handbag? Unfortunately for me, bead work seems to be very hit or miss. There are some bags where the bead work is exquisite and I want nothing more than to find a reason, any reason to carry that particular bag. Then there are other times when I simply don’t understand why a designer would settle for misplaced or thoughtlessly placed beads. This kind of “detail” can take any relatively decent bag and make it absolutely fugly. So, here I am, on this gloomy Tuesday wondering where this particular Rafe bag falls. (more…)

Honestly, I find myself forgetting about some handbag lines from time to time. DKNY is one of them. I guess I think of the “big brands” more often. But, I do promise I’ll try to do better. And if DKNY continues to churn out bags like this one, I would most likely be inclined to remember a bit easier.

Sure, there really isn’t anything *that* special going on with the DKNY Chain Double Flap Crossbody Bag, however, there is something about it that I really like. Come to think of it, it has been a while since I’ve found myself not really being able to put my finger on why I like a given bag so much. I welcome the challenge. (more…)

I love it when a brand that I normally don’t think about very often makes a bag that surprises me. It makes my little grinch heart grow two sizes, so it’s sort of like a normal person’s heart. If only more brands made nice bags, I would be a substantially better person than I am right now.

The Elie Tahari Beverly Braided Tote is one of those bags that has made me an ever-so-slightly better person than I was before I saw it, and that’s to its credit. Also to its credit: it braiding, handles, and overall look. (more…)

For those of you who think that Alexander McQueen handbags might be a little too out there for your taste, I may have found a bag for you.

Looking at the name of the bag, I was wondering what was really meant by the word camouflage. Did it have to do with the colors, the design, some hidden meaning? It is not that McQueen camouflaged his genius or his innate ability to take design to the next level. Perhaps the word surrounds the idea that the bag is a bit more understated than most of us might be used to. (more…)

For those of you who work in the corporate world, you know that it can sometimes be tricky matching a nice handbag with your work place attire. With so many gorgeous handbags out there I love when I come across one that instantly reminds me of a perfect bag for the office. The J. Crew Marche Satchel is just this kind of bag. (more…)

As I’ve said before, I am not one to wear flashy feathers or sequins or even sparkles. But this Coach Poppy Feather Crossbody has single-handedly made me like colored feathers in addition to restoring my faith in the somewhat iffy Coach Poppy line. I really can’t say much about this little bunch of joyous purple feathers except that it’s a bag fit for a diva- or the girl next door. Allow me to explain.

Because it’s tiny and utterly adorable, it’s suitable for people even outside of the over-the-top-give-me-sequins-I-need-sequins camp of dressing. And yes, there are people who are that obsessed with sequins. I know them. But this bitty bag smacks of glamour in a way that’s not completely obnoxious or even slightly insane. No, here the feathers add just the right dose of spice without going razzle-dazzle crazy. (more…)

I can’t tell you for sure whether or not female alt-hip-hop artist Santigold (who spelled her name Santogold as recently as last year) had a hand in the making of this bag or if it’s even named after her, but if either of those things is true, then bravo to the Matt & Nat Santogold Bag.

I haven’t heard all that much of her work, but I do know that she’s a solo female artist doing her own thing, which is incredibly difficult in the male-dominated music industry where female solo artists are expected to look, act and sound a certain way in order to be viable artists. And not only does Santigold march to the beat of her own drummer stylistically, so does Matt & Nat. (more…)

Before I say anything, I have to comment on how quickly this year has flown by. I cannot believe it is already November! However, the last few months of the year brings some of my favorite events, holidays and activities. Another one of my favorite things is that with all of the Holiday parties and gatherings I feel as though I have an excuse to beef up my evening bag collection and this makes me happy. So, it should be no surprise that I’ve been spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out which bags I should buy; I can always figure out my outfit afterwords. (more…)

As far as bag brands go, I’ve never been much for Rafe – they have a very distinct aesthetic that tends to be very over-the-top, and they’re usually extremely feminine, which has never really been my look. Sometimes I kind of like what they do, other times I think that their bags really limit what could be a huge customer base.

I have no second thoughts about the Rafe Agyness Chain-Embroidered Crossbody, however. It’s on-trend and just restrained enough to be cool and still have lots of personality. (more…)

Junior Drake Pleated Mini Bag

I have yet to decide on my perfect mini bag for fall, and I’m still actively taking applications. I know that I have to have one (and really, they’re perfectly functional for me – all I ever carry is my keys and my Blackberry), and I think I may have found a strong candidate in the Junior Drake Pleated Mini Bag. (more…)

Get ready to vote! I’ve been hung up on the Emanuel Ungaro Studded Leather Clutch for over a week now. Net-a-Porter is one of my favorite sites to peruse. I love all of the amazing designer bags that the site consistently has in stock. Oh, and when I say “has in stock” I really mean tempt me to the point of Carrie Bradshaw spontaneous shopping sprees. Anyways, this clutch has got me all twisted around and I cannot decide if it is an edgy unique hit or a disastrous miss. (more…)
