We’ve been talking recently about how stock photos just do not do some bags justice, and this is completely the case with the J.Crew Editor Satchel. My friend recently purchased this bag and it looks so much different than this photograph. Here, the bag looks like it’s made out of some sort of pleathery plastic, the way bags look when they are clearly not leather but they obviously are trying to be (you know what I mean;). No, in real life the leather looks supple and is so soft to feel.

Now, my friend purchased this bag in “Fresh Melon,” which would not have been my choice because, as you know, I’m not a pink person. But that’s beside the point. The coolest feature of this bag is, in my opinion, the resin hardware. The long strap is kind of like a metal strap, but is much more innovatively chic and makes a really cute clinkety-clink sound that sounds subtly professional. I’d get it just for that chain. Who knows, maybe that why my friend did. Buy through J.Crew for $250 on sale.

I completely agree with you — I saw this bag in the catalog and did a double take because the chain is, well…off the chain. Very cool indeed.

I’m not sure how I feel about the chain. Maybe it’s the picture but it looks like plastic to me. I’m sure it looks better in person.

I can’t remember where I was, but I saw someone carrying this bag last week and did a double take trying to remember where I had seen it. It looks way more expensive than it is.

The resin hardware is definitely unique…I don’t know that I’ve seen that anywhere before. I think the chain looks cool…is it detatchable though? I like the color selection, and I think the melon is really cute, almost orange-y…but this color is a great “not boring” neutral. FYI the price is down to $199…that’s a lot of bag for that price.

I just ordered this bag today for $199, plus free shipping. I was in love with it before I read this, but now I’m even more excited to receive it!

I have loved this bag ever since I first saw it on J Crew’s site. Can anyone help me out and let me know if they’ve seen the Sandalwood color in person? In the photos, it always has pink tones, and I’m hoping it’s truly a more golden brown or camel color in person. I like it either way, but am also not a pink gal. Also ladies, there are several of these on eBay right now…brand new and with excellent prices! Just don’t outbid me…lol.

An update post to my earlier one: I did purchase one of these on eBay in Sandalwood. It is indeed gorgeous. It’s a subtle camel color, with more pinkish undertones as compared to golden undertones. However, it is not pink, which I am thankful for. It’s an interesting and unique color, and I think I can carry it all year. It’s a very professional looking bag as well, which I was hoping for. While I love the chain, I don’t think I will keep it attached all the time, as the clinking is actually loud. The straps are long enough to fit perfectly over my shoulder, so I’ll use it that way. Three inside compartments, including a center zip pocket, make this bag nearly perfect or me. Mine arrived with some dings, which is to be expected with an eBay purchase. Take note this leather is delicate and will pick up scratches and corner dings for sure. I hope it just all adds to the character over time.

Update: I bought this bag in February (full price) and it’s falling apart already. Is anyone else having the same issue? The paint on the metal bits is chipping off and the leather is splitting. :-(
