Faux exotics are something of a precarious proposition. Just like it’s nearly impossible to make convincing fake leather, turning real leather into fake python or crocodile is difficult at best and an exercise in futility at worst. Just like alchemy, exotic embossing is a pseudoscience that rarely reaps results that are worth a second look, but the Furla Carmen Python Hobo might be one of the exceptions to that proves the rule.

Furla tends to be better at embossing than the average brand because it does so much of it, despite an occasional misstep like the fluorescent tote we discussed recently. This bag is another luxurious-looking winner.

Embossing obviously needs to be seen in person to be accurately judged, but this bag strikes me as better than average. Furla got the natural tones of python just right, and although a season bag fiend would be able to tell the difference, I’m not sure that I’m willing to pay such a huge difference to impress seasoned bag fiends. Sometimes you want the look without the price tag, and Furla has made a very reasonable alternative. Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $495.

It’s okay. I’m not really a fan of Furla. For me, they often look like handbags that my 80 year old grandmother would wear.

Yes, too simple and muted design.

I own a quilted Carmen, I love. This would also look great with an ivory handle.
