If there’s one thing you don’t expect from Marc Jacobs, it’s minimalism. Whether it’s his signature collection or the more accessibly priced and younger-skewing Marc by Marc Jacobs line, Jacobs is known for his sense of detailed downtown quirk. It’s made him one of the most successful people in all of the fashion industry, and although his lines from season to season may differ widely, he almost never varies from that defining aesthetic.

Except that with Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2012, he totally does. The show was altogether leaner and more athletic than what we’ve come to expect from Jacobs’ diffusion line, particularly when it came to handbags. The cubed leather wristlets and bicolor handled clutches set a very specific tone for the accessories, and I can’t help but be excited to see how that sleek look will translate to the rest of the line come spring. A gallery of the bags, after the jump.

15 looks like the lunch bag I had in middle school.

#s 18 & 20 are a little similar to the Loewe Flamingo. Punchy!

Minimalism is one thing. These just look cheap! There is not a single bag that I like. I don’t like the striped totes, I hate the lunchbox style one and I am not a fan of any of those colors. They look plastic.
Oh Marc Jacobs – I’m ashamed of you..

Agreed, I am not feeling this collection at all. It doesn’t seem MJ to me one bit… more like a knock-off of Michael Kors a few years ago, or Kate Spade.

  • Kasss

This cube looks like MaxMara ones.

  • Raf

Most of them have written Jil Sander knockoff all over it, they really look like Jil Sander’s from recent collections.

  • Gatsby

I’ve never bought MbyMJ because of the linings. That graffiti lining is hideous.

  • Bagolicious

The cube one looks like a Givenchy Pandora want-to-be bag. But, it’s a far cry from Givenchy.

some of the totes are cute, but i’m not into the square clutches..

  • jen

It’s cute if it’s well made, but it’s basically a rip-off from both Celine and Raf Simons/Jil Sander. Marc seems to have run out of own ideas.
