Exclusive: The Ferragamo Bags Paul Andrew Designed and His Thoughts On This Year’s Met Gala

We have the first look at the one-of-a-kind exclusive evening bags

It’s the first Monday of May which means one of the most important and interesting red carpet events is upon us. The Met Gala has become so popular that the red carpet is now covered by the likes of E!’s Live From the Red Carpet and countless outlets via streaming and up to date social media coverage. The Met Gala is the annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. This year’s theme is sure to bring insanely ornate and unique outfits with the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” – a play on the famous Susan Sontag essay “Notes on Camp.”

The Met Gala is a huge opportunity for designers to think outside of the box and show their most creative designs for the celebrities they dress and the designers will typically then walk the red carpet with the celebrities they dress. For the first time, Salvatore Ferragamo will be hosting a table at this year’s Met Gala. Creative Director Paul Andrew has designed one-of-a-kind exclusive evening bags for the special occasion and we have the exclusive look at the new Boxyz Handbag that will accompany Paul Andrew’s guests on the carpet tonight.

We were able to ask Paul Andrew a few questions leading into his big night and have exclusive photos and a sketch of the bag as well.

This year’s theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. How have you interpreted this theme into your designs for the evening?

Camp is about exaggeration, having fun with a bit of drama. For Ferragamo, the inherent juxtaposition of masculinity and femininity in the brand’s legacy became a starting point for reimagining icons and design details.

Tell us about the one of a kind evening bags you’ve designed for those you’re dressing?

The Met is a very special moment and it’s of the utmost importance that everything feel extremely special and personalized for my friends attending with me. I’ve reimagined the just launched boxyz bag for evening as a mini, one in silver metallic and the other in pink suede with feathers that spoke to the sophistication of the house and a strong nod to camp.

What do you look forward to most for your night at the Met Gala?

“Seeing everyone together, an eclectic cast of characters from music to film and television, all extremely talented artists.”

Hero: Pom Klementieff in Ferragamo. Magenta double-breasted suit and ensemble mauve silk cape with oversized neck bow detail paired with rose satin stingray and gold metal minaudière and gold stiletto metallic foil leather pumps.

Chiwetel Ejiofor – Black wool peak lapel silk jacquard jacket with Gancini vertical chain link pattern complimented by a silver lurex Gancini detail reflected in the reimagined bow tie made of ostrich feathers in silver grey. Wool tuxedo pant paired with patent leather oxfords with grosgrain ribbon laces and pearl nugget handcrafted nuggets.

Frances Aaternir – Silver foil leather column gown and hand dyed aqua ostrich feather shoulder cape paired with black satin and patent leather stiletto sandals and silver metallic mini ‘boxyz’ bag.
