The more I look through the handbags from Chloe Fall 2011, the more I wonder who the Chloe girl is. I also wonder if Chloe’s accessories designers know the answer to that question, or if they’ve chosen instead to hope that they can make everyone feel like a Chloe girl by creating a collection that eschews a unifying aesthetic in favor of encompassing a group of ideas that are seemingly not related.

If you like hard-lined, ladylike handbags in exotic materials (or bags with actual animal heads), Chloe has a bag for you. If you spent all of your childhood lusting after your mom’s Coach bucket bags, well, there are plenty of designs that look like those as well. Are you a hippie who likes colorblocking and whipstitching? You’re not left out, either. Of course, bags aren’t sold as a collection; they’re sold as individual pieces to individual women who probably don’t care what the rest of the bags in the collection look like as long as they love the pieces that they’re buying. Still, though, I can’t shake the impression that this is a collection without an identity, and I’m not sure how you go about marketing that.

not crazy about any of the bucket bags…

  • Graciella

Very weird collection and not Chloe at all.

  • nappy

What is up with that snake head!!!! it looks like my hillbilly uncle went to the forest, shot a snake, stuck its head on a bag with crazy glue and gave it to me thinking it’s high fashion! my god!! The collection looks like a teacher handed out pamphlets to students and said “design for Chloe!”.. the students then made their own versions and sent it 15 minutes before the runway show so, here it is!

    • nappy

      p.s. the students were: 1. a hillbilly, 2. a hippie 3., a granny and a mexican

      • Millie

Hahaha, that is pretty much exactly what I thought when I looked at them!

    • AMP

BWAHAHAHA I feel of my chair on the ‘design for Chloe!’ part! You nailed it! This is one random collection of bags! No coherence AT ALL!

I am sure the leather is nice, but these styles have been done to death IMO.

@nappy — bahahah totally agree with you!

I don’t even think a Coach woman would buy those bags. And, I’m definitely a Coach woman. Maybe a Coach woman from the ’80s.
These look dated, old, and dowdy.
Not what I expected from Chloe.

    • They don’t so much remind me of modern Coach, but a few of the bags (specifically #4) remind me of the leather Coach bags my mom used to carry when I was a kid. Similar hardware and seams.

  • Kat

That bag with the snake head is nasty. I can’t think of any woman that I know that will think “Ooooooh. A snake head. Prettyyyyyyyy.”

    • AMP

Maybe that’s something a girl from Slytherin might use? Or Tom Riddle’s mother, Merope Gaunt?!?!

Very interesting observations, Amanda. Cathy Horyn talks about the Chloe collection in today’s NYT, and, essentially, she comes to a similar conclusion. It’s an interesting read, if you have the time. The article is called, “After the Pressure, The Smoke.”

    • I always have time for Cathy Horyn! I’ll cue it up to read after I finish up with Housewives. Thanks for the tip.

I saw this post and instantly thought of coach in the 80-90s. A Step in the wrong direction for Chloe

  • Leah

    Eek. No thanks.

  • KaylaNiche

Not impressed at. all. I abhor the bucket style.

More like Chloe “Failed” 2011…What is this?
These bags look so outdated!!!! And the colors.

  • ping

I agree with Mochababe, these bags are outdated and frankly quite boring. I was not into the bucket bags from the 80’s (and I did have a coach back then), and definitely not into these now. But what can one expect now, with so many bag “designers” (i use the term loosely b/c so many houses are jumping on the handbag wagons b/c the profit margin in accessories are so high), what can one expect. When you used to see a handbag, you know which “house” it came out of. Aside from few amazing designers, so many new bags today are either recycled copies or just the same styles as other houses. Like shoes, they are probably made in the same factories with just the brand names stuck on. This season is more dismal than others:(
It’s the first season in a long time, where I only purchased the celine boston tote and nothing else.
I enjoy reading this blog more than the bags now.

I don’t get it. It doesn’t seem like Chloe at all.
I couldn’t help laughing at the comment
‘that they can make everyone feel like a Chloe girl. You’re not left out, either.’

  • edoardo

Nice, especially use of esotic leathers!

  • reneeo

I don’t like any of them. Eww

  • babe

    what went wrong?

  • Sohini

Number 1 looks like a Fossil bag I had when I was 22. Number 8 looks like what Etro did several years back. This is bad… How much is the snake head bag??? Like $7k I bet.

  • Christine

dont really like the color blocks

  • Marianna

I can honestly say I don’t like any of these bags. The Chloe designers need to clear their heads and get back on track!

  • Cathy Fitz

This “collection” truly is all over the place. Some of the bags I think I could actually want to have, but some look like classic Coach rip-offs.

  • Jacqueline Suzanne

I am not impressed with this collection!!!

  • jenny

why is there a snake head…ahhhhhh

  • 19yearslater

This looks like an 80s inspired collection. This is a 90s inspired season. The snake head bag is just hideous.

  • Krista

    Kind of outdated.

  • Bagolicious

Awful and absolutely not very Chloe-esque. Chloe is my favorite handbag designer, but I guess I’ll just have to go with my traditional Chloes, as I won’t be spending a dime on that new collection. Bucket bags? Yuck!

  • pd

the bags overall aren’t particularly in worthy of being in your closet as timeless pieces; the majority look outdated, even if the collection was meant to meander on retro vintage. But I actually find the snake head to be something fantastic, bordering on zoological experiment, but interesting, though i would’ve opted for a matching python skin for the overall bag instead of two different tones and a sleeker shape rather than an archaic 80’s structure.
