Unfortunately for all of you Chanel lovers, there will be another Chanel price increase happening on July 1st, 2021. As always, the members of the PurseForum broke this news (really, our tPFers know all!). If this feels like a Déjà vu, it is because there was a price increase in January of this year already.

While many of you would like to run out and nab a bag prior to the increase, it won’t be easy. In fact, there are no classic bags readily available for walk in clients and stock on these coveted classics are low to nonexistent. Thankfully, you will have much better luck on the resale market with bags like the Classic Flap, 2.55, Boy Bag, 19 Bag, and more.

Impact on the Chanel Resale Market?

We are absolutely expecting prices of pre-loved bags to go up across the board in the wake of this significant retail price increase. You will likely see this impact the resale market with more bags flooding the top sites (like Fashionphile) with sellers hoping to turn a profit based on higher new retail prices. Thankfully, unless you are looking for a sought-after and rare seasonal bag, the resale market for Chanel typically doesn’t command a higher-than-retail resale value we see consistently with Hermès.

Editor’s Note:

As we reported a few days ago, Chanel was going to raise its prices for classic bags today, and so we can finally share the new official US prices. We will work on bringing you European and other prices as well to update our Chanel worldwide pricing guides.

I bought my last Chanel bag in 2018. A tremendous case of buyer’s remorse kicked in when I got the credit card bill for a bag that I bought in Paris. The good news for me for these crazy prices increases is that I can sell that 2018 purchase this year for more money.

I am a Chanel fan, I really love the Chanel bags that I own. The increases only make my already owned bags worth so much more. Yes, any future purchase does a bit more damage to the wallet, but it’s a Chanel wallet! Ha!

It doesn’t make the bag more valuable, especially if there is no changes in quality, style. They are over inflating prices due to other reasons besides exclusivity.

“there are no classic bags readily available for walk in clients and stock on these coveted classics are low to nonexistent” I don’t know where but in Paris, there are classic bags available.

Doing better than my investments. I should buy a bunch and sell when I reach retirement.

I asked my SA (who has worked at Chanel for 10 years) why there’s another price increase. She said “Chanel doesn’t tell us much, but the cost of materials has gone up and the cost is being passed onto consumers”.

However, if Chanel is increasing their prices to maintain exclusivity & hurt secondary market profits, it may backfire. A well respected reseller offers good prices for brand new Chanel bags, etc. and marks them below Chanel retail. Perhaps, due to Covid & job insecurity, a ton of bags have hit the market, over the last year, with no end in sight. For those that don’t need the “boutique experience” bags can still be had at “affordable” (subjective word) prices.

In the end, we’re not paying for the actual cost of the bag. We are paying the price for the value that chanel wants to create in the fashion industry. A value that’s not real but created in the minds of those that find value in exclusive expensive brand items. The price increase in my opinion is a very smart move by chanel. I think Chanel is trying to enter the same market whose consumers shop for exclusive brands with price tags that equal as an example hermes birkin bags and above.

Purchase a Chanel Jumbo flap in Paris 2015, thank God. I bought a shopping tote in 2014 in NYC and rarely use either one. Both perfect mint condition! Will past down to my daughter and her daughter. I’m over the designer bag craze! Just want to travel now and enjoy life, material items not necessary, its memories now!

Yup. I think that building memories with your loved ones or close friends is the most valuable asset you can have, especially during these uncertain times. I find that material goods give you the most high when you first obtain it, but the effect wears out after a short while. But we live in a world and society where value seems to be emphasized on materialism more than the more fundamental things that make us happy.

So, if I remember well, 4 years ago you could have classic lambskin WOC for 1300£ at the Heathrow (tax free zone) or 1600£ in Herrods London, and now the price is double? Are they for real? Well, I don’t even know why I searched for this, as this covid-madness showed me that I don’t actually need anything apart from food and freedom of movement. Fashion is so superficial…

What is the reason for these dramatic increases? I read that Chanel is raising their prices to negatively effect the resale market. Is that true?

I am no economist, but I think it’s a smart move that prices out many, increased brand desirability and position in the luxury market. Chanel knows their core customer well enough to know that this increase, albeit drastic, won’t affect most of them in any significant way. I’m interested to see what is going to happen to the secondary market in its wake.

How does Chanel know whether or not
their core customer base was impacted by the pandemic and economic downturn? According to statics things are looking pretty bleak out there. Was their customer base left untouched?

According to their financials, despite global shutdowns during the height of the pandemic,
2020 revenue was only down 18% to just over $10b compared to 2019. This is remarkable, especially since retail stores were either closed down entirely or heavily affected by missing tourism all over the place. Typically, HHI individuals are less affected by economic downturns like the recession or the recent pandemic.

It may be a good business strategy for Chanel as people will always be desperate to wear their CCs, but as a consumer of luxury goods, I’d rather purchase quality at those prices like Hermès, Fendi, LV.

Given the threads about LV’s poor alignment, skipped stitching, printing inconsistencies, new canvas cracking, surface flaws on leather, crooked stitching, poor shaping, asymmetry, hardware tarnishing prematurely, peeling prints, they’re on the same level of quality as Chanel, arguably lower.

Totally agree! Several years ago I bought a LV Alma online, but it came with a small, hairline scratch. I informed them I was returning it, for an exchange, & they strongly disagreed that it was shipped that way. They would “evaluate it” to determine if I made the scratch. Two weeks later they shipped out a new bag. While I was annoyed I also appreciated their high standards.

Fast forward to today. The last 4 bags I received from LV looked exactly as you described. What happened to LV? Idk, but if I spend thousands of dollars I expect a quality product.

I think putting LV on the same level of Hermès and Fendi is a bit of a stretch. You can walk into any mall in a small town and see dozens of LV’s. LV is the epitome of logo-mania and over saturation.

Agreed. Hermes handwork by a single craftsman/woman puts their bags in a class by themselves.

Agreed! LV is everywhere in my small town. It really has become the “entry level bag”. I have one in the damier azur print and I think I’ll leave it at that. As for Chanel, I’m glad I bought my bags awhile bag. To think I paid $1200 for my WOC in the boutique. The exact same bag is now close to 3 grand. Yikes!

they want to make the bags more desirable, meaning if the bag is hire in price, they are thinking hopefully you really think about your purchase. not just to buy buy chanel cause you have the cash. also they are wanting to slow down the market and not have it flooded with chanel products out there.

There are grey market sellers who come into Rolex stores to buy loads of watches which they sell at a markup. Perhaps Chanel suspected this was happening in their pre-owned market so want to make them more difficult to purchase (aka more exclusive) so they have more confidence that customers who buy can truly afford them and thus more inclined to keep them.

i think they need to focus on quality. alot of people are reporting a decline on craftmanship.. and they need to slow down the production of products. though

Timothy

Exactly. I actually want them to price out most people because I really don’t wanna carry a bag that everyone can buy. It is luxury after all. The quality though is what I’m struggling with. They just make way too many things to be able to actually increase quality. I will appreciate another brand that is Hermès status. People say they can always buy Hermès but they are often stuck with either paying double than retail or have to actually build a relationship (which they don’t have).

They are slowing down production on the bags. They’re just not increasing quality because they know people will buy regardless.

I think it’s great. Clearly a smart strategy since their business is still growing despite constant and significant price increases. ? It will continue to pull the second-hand market upward, which will undoubtedly price out many.

Fun fact, Chanel has remained the consistently most searched-for brand on PB for the last decade. Our articles on Chanel also generate the most views on average, so clearly the brand has not suffered under the price increases. If anything, it’s only made the brand more desirable.
