Oh, Karl Lagerfeld. You had me at The Cure.

There weren’t many handbags to be found on the catwalk at Chanel Fall 2011, which struck me as something of a surprise. Chanel fully acknowledges the place of leather goods in its company history, and normally part of its enthusiasm for accessories spills over onto the runway in the form of lots of goodies for handbag lovers. This time, though, there was relatively little to see.

What we did see in the goth dystopia that Lagerfeld created in Paris’ Grand Palais was quite good. Most of the bags were of the chain-strapped flap variety, but Lagerfeld got rid of the brand’s iconic quilting and leather-woven handles to give a starker take on a Chanel classic. Little quilted hand-held bags were spotted here and there, but mostly the models walked with their hands empty, perhaps in a nod to the bleak-chic setting of the show. Although I’m disappointed to not have seen more bags, now I’m even more excited for press previews. Chanel wins again.

Not sure what the hand-held bags are about… but #7 is a must for me!!!

  • KaylaNiche

I LOVE these! Leave it to Chanel to be new and fresh but still true to their classic aesthetic. The quilted black hand held is lovely.

  • Lulugurl

Don’t really get the little handbags, but the rest are super classic, loving the streamlined designs and colours!

  • Lucinda

I love these so much it hurts! (Not the hand held ones though, not sure what they’re about…) Great clean straight lines, I’m mean I like Chanel quilting but this is something a bit different and definately on my must have list.

  • shiro

I dunno, I think they’re all sorta boring. And those hand helds look like makeup bags that come free with purchase. Retro vintage is in currently and it just looks like a rehash of generic bags made in the 70s.

    No.7 Please! TDF!

J’adore Chanel! Dying for pretty much anything quilted; where’s the tweed in this range?

Do you know this shop ? les 3 marches de Catherine B ! i found his web site: http://www.catherine-b.com

  • edoardo

I love the collection but these bags are stupid. Where is the genius Lagerfeld that we know?

  • Lori

I must be a spring bag girl. These bags are boring. I am pleased to see some shoulder straps, though they look like 80 lb. chains.

  • Sohini

I’m sorry, but if I’m going to spend 2k-3k on a Chanel purse, I want it to look like a Chanel purse. These designs are fine, but they don’t capture the essance of Chanel.

    • Kate

I completely agree. To me the essence of a Chanel bag is the beautiful quilted leather, interlocking Cs, the chain strap…I dream of such bags…

  • Christine

I think I prefer their classic collection with the quilted leather and the interlocking Cs

  • Cathy Fitz

The hand-held bags – horrid. But I love the others.

  • jc

these are so much more interesting than their classics

I like number 7, but I’m missing the interlocking CC’s. Whenever I get the means to afford an authentic Chanel, I want people to know. I would call people just so that they could see me walk to my truck with one.

    • Chels K

Heh! I think they’re smoothly classic, go-most-places bags. I think they say “I’m confident.” I like them.

  • Chris

I’d be interested in seeing how much these retail for. They certainly are much less expensive to make – and looping a chain/leather strap over D rings on the outside/side of the purse says someone was taking a snooze on creativity day.

  • MizzJ

I actually like this new direction, although they are a bit grannyish, but hey granny is in! The quilting and C’s are yes iconic and irreplaceable, but c’mon people, it does get a bit boring no?

  • Millie

It’s so funny, I was talking about how it would be nice to see something different from Chanel the other day with a friend of mine who is distinctly not a fan of their usual quilted look. I think these are just different enough to satisfy detractors like her without stepping too far outside the comfort zone of hardcore Chanel fans. Plus, you wouldn’t see yourself coming and going all the time. Depending on the price I might pick up 2 or 7.

If you are looking to add a true classic to your collection I have found a great resource in Catherine B Les Trois Marches. I believe it has already been mentioned in the comments but I must insist that this is truly the best resource that I have discovered for those hard to find pieces. So for those of you who dream in Chanel (and of course Hermès) please be sure to check out the following website..http://www.catherine-b.com Enjoy!

Wait- goth dystopia? Is that the official theme? Fail. The toiletry case bags are especially bad, and I’m just meh over the others. I think that chain would be really annoying.

  • Christine

Wow, I think those chain bags will be a hit! They look amazing.

  • Bir

Interesting and different very basic and clean I love this collection !!!!

  • Krista

The shaped bags look like makeup bags.
