Sometimes, you lay eyes on a bag for the first time and it just makes you happy. The elements click into place and form a relatively harmonious whole, the leather choice works for the desired structure, the bag feels modern, but not like it’s trying too hard. That’s what happened for me when I saw the Botkier Honore Satchel at the brand’s headquarters last week – I just knew.
The industry’s move toward modernism plagues many contemporary brands right now – how do they reconcile the slouchy, casual feel that they’ve succeeded with in the past with the sleek, structured look that’s doing so well with high-end consumers? Right now, this bag is one of the better efforts I’ve seen at combining the two ideas into a bag that doesn’t look like it’s having an identity crisis. The hidden handle attachments, in addition to being an interesting design flourish, allows the face of the bag to feel a little bit cleaner and the angular trim to take center stage.
The bag feels a bit brutalist, in a way – strong, straight lines accented by relatively little hardware. Because the leather isn’t perfectly rigid, though, the bag has a note of softness to it that makes it a potentially good strong fit for the contemporary market. Those combined elements make this the kind of design that fits well for both work and play, and the size is perfect. Buy through ShopBop for $545.
