Neutral Color Blocking: Chic, Versatile, Transitional

After the last two springs and summers, I can imagine that a lot of you are really sick of seeing bright color blocking. A yellow top, purple skirt and red shoes looked fresh in 2010, but now, it just looks a lot like everything we’ve already seen. In light of that, all of the neutral color blocked bags that have emerged lately seem like a breath of fresh air – a new, subtle take on a trend that’s been anything but subtle.

Mixing neutrals also has its functional advantages. Not only is it easier to work a black-and-tan bag into a wardrobe than a cobalt-and-green one, but a neutral bag has a longer potential lifespan than a non-neutral one, particularly when you’re dealing with a bold trend like color blocking. Neutrals, even light ones, aren’t beholden to a particular fashion season or outdoor temperature, so these bags are perfect for seasonal transitions, in addition to being a strong closet staple for years to come. There are certain bags that celebrities, no matter who they are, just love to carry. We already showed you an amazing round up of celebrities and their Celine Luggage Totes, and today we are breaking down the celebs that love, covet, and carry Hermes Birkins. The Hermes Birkin is not only the ultimate timeless classic, but it’s also the bag that celebrities have to wait to get just like the rest of us. The Birkin is the equalizer; celebrities and regular folk alike yearn for this bag, but most of them (and us) can’t get it the minute they want it. Yep, that’s right: Hermes doesn’t “gift” bags to celebrities. It doesn’t have to.

I had a close encounter of the VBH kind over the weekend. I was shopping with some friends at the Woodbury Common outlets north of New York City (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, by the way), and at the Last Call Neiman Marcus store, I found the little corner of the handbag section where they were hiding the stuff you’d actually want to buy: Jason Wu, Marni, and most excitingly of all, VBH. There was only one VBH bag, but even in that less-than-glamourous setting, it was the clear winner of the whole group. I somehow managed to stop myself from buying it, but obviously I’m still thinking about it quite fondly several days later.

Thankfully, our friends at Moda Operandi have conspired to distract me from my reverse buyer’s remorse, and naturally, the only answer is more VBH. Without any context, who would have thought that carrying around a crystalized zoo animal would be so posh? Somehow, year after year, Judith Leiber makes its eccentric, idiosyncratic style work. The brand’s crystal-studded minaudière bags are Leiber’s most iconic pieces by a mile, and even though there are imitations, nothing beats owning the real deal.
