Lanvin proves that beautiful things can come in small packages

Lanvin Lizard Box Clutch, $2127 via Matches

Yesterday, I got to talking about my love for Lanvin in general and Alber Elbaz in particular over at TalkShoes, and now I’m prepared to do to do the same here. Bags like the Lanvin Lizard Box Clutch just inspire that in me. I could look at this little bag all day, mostly because it shirks the traditional conventions of evening bags in order to pursue a look that’s a bit more unexpected; you won’t find any gleaming hardware or intricate beading here.

Fill in the Blank: The Marc Jacobs Spotted Teddies Shearling Hobo Bag is…

While this bag is considered one of fall’s statement pieces, I wonder how many of you plan to go buy it.

The Marc Jacobs Spotted Teddies Shearling Hobo Bag is all about fuzzy shearling with a few bold black polka dots. While some risk-taking fashionistas are surely scurrying out to buy this bag, I would only consider buying it to double as a pillow in times of sudden sleepiness.

Bright and bold, Balenciaga Voyage 24H Rose Fluo

I know I’ve asked before, but seriously, where did summer go? School is no longer out for the summer; it’s back in session and the month of August is nearly gone. I spent much of the season traveling on short weekend getaways, and each time I began packing I ran into the same problem: I don’t have an overnight bag that I love. Large luggage with rolling wheels is in a very different category from spacious but efficient large duffel bags; one is much harder to find than the other.

Of course Balenciaga has an answer for my travel bag woes, and in a bright, eye-catching fluorescent color at that. With small details that are oh-so-Balenciaga, the Voyage 24H in Rose Fluo is a statement piece for every girl who loves a quick escape.

9 Things: Fall’s Best Animal Print Bags

To those of you out there who don’t like leopard print, I apologize. Not only are you probably sick of hearing about it by now, but it looks as though it’s going to be a long, long time before the furious din of conversation from the fashion world pipes down. We seem to have latched on to this historically popular print for an inordinately long amount of time, compared to the average trend lifespan.

For those of us who love leopard, on the other hand, cold weather brings it out in spades, particularly on luxuriously printed haircalf. But this winter isn’t about just leopard – all animal prints are getting their moment in the sun, and to help you get started on your search, we present you with Fall 2011’s best animal print bags.

Essie’s Fall 2011 nail polishes are handbag-themed!

To be perfectly honest with you, I never thought this day would come. Megs and I have been obsessing over nail polish for months (seriously, I’ve amassed about 200 polishes since spring), and we’ve been trying to find a good way to somehow connect it back to handbags so that we could share our obsession with you guys. Thanks to Essie, we’ve finally found a link!

Essie’s Fall 2011 nail polish collection is called Carry On, and all six shades are based on the color palette commonly found in midcentury handbag design. It’s a little Mad Men, a little contemporary, and a whole lot of fun.

Balenciaga Motorcycle Bags only exist because models liked them

We don’t often get a peek behind the scenes at the business and logistical decisions that go into making our favorite handbags a reality, but thanks to a recent Women’s Wear Daily interview with Balenciaga genius Nicolas Ghesquiere, we now know a little bit more about one of the most popular bag designs in the modern accessories world: The Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag.

Namely, we know that it almost never existed in the first place. Ghesquiere tells WWD that he made the prototype at the behest of company brass, and they dismissed it as too soft, too lightweight and too lacking in structure. As it turns out, all the things that they thought would make it unpopular are what make the design so beloved. Those of us who have loved and adored our fair share of Balenciaga bags over the years have one group of people to thank for it: Models.

Miu Miu always knows how to hit me where it hurts

Miu Miu Lady Pushlock Bag, $1350 via Bergdorf Goodman

Right in the wallet.

For some reason, Miu Miu’s bags often don’t tempt me quite as much as everything (and I do mean everything) else that the brand makes, particularly its shoes. Still, if Miuccia were to personally deduct money from my bank account every month and send me a random Miu Miu piece of her choosing, I bet I’d be thrilled at least 11 months out of the year.

If it were the Miu Miu Pushlock Lady Bag that showed up on my doorstep, I know I would be. As a satchel or a shoulder bag (maybe even a crossbody – Bergdorfs doesn’t list the strap drop), this just-big-enough retro throwback is everything I want in a fall handbag.

Brand to Watch: Pierre Hardy

Pierre Hardy Leather Clutch, $700. Pierre Hardy Suede and Patent Shoulder Bag, $1350. Both via Net-a-Porter.

For most of you, Pierre Hardy isn’t a new name by a long shot. The French designer is largely famous for his footwear, and his gloriously modern wedges in particular are what garner most of the (well-deserved) attention that comes his way. But what about Hardy’s handbags?

His bags have been a cult favorite for years, but more and more retailers seem to be amenable to the charms of Hardy’s bold, graphic designs. Particularly in the face of colorblocking and New Minimalism, the collection’s omnipresent thick, contrasting leather trim and limited hardware fit right in with what’s going on in the industry now. Several Pierre Hardy bags just popped up on Net-a-Porter for fall; you can check out larger pictures of my favorites after the jump.

Orange you glad it’s almost fall?

You’ve probably heard much being made over both crimson and cobalt as the colors to wear for fall, but the accessories that I’ve seen over the past few days make me wonder: Is orange going to be the real star of the show? Have we all ignored the obvious winner?

I was already planning to put together a roundup of orange bags for fall yesterday when Proenza Schouler tweeted the above picture from W magazine of the brand’s PS11 in a lovely shade of pumpkin. We all know that the PS11 is my personal pick of the litter, but if you’d like to go in a different (but still orange) direction for fall, check out the rest of our picks after the jump.

These handbags are designed to look like cartoons…and they totally do

Photos via Design-Milk.com

If you’re like anything like me, you’re going to spend the next ten minutes of your life staring at the picture of these JumpFromPaper handbags, trying in earnest to make them look three-dimensional. It won’t work, so you can stop now if you’d like. The bags are designed to look like two-dimensional cartoons, and, well, they do.

Yesterday, a friend alerted me to a post about these bags on Design-Milk.com (which is a great blog if you’re into non-handbag visual things), and I must say, they’re…interesting. It’s a very well-executed concept. and the Singaporean team behind the bags has seen the idea through to its logical extreme. I’m just not sure that they’re for grown women. I could see Japanese high schoolers going gaga for this look because it’s very graphic and girlish, but how do you think they’ll play to the rest of the market? Take a look at some more photos after the jump, and let us know whether or not you’d carry one of these designs.
