We aren’t known to be the biggest Versace supporters at our site, but we’ve been feeling a it warmer lately. I know some people absolutely love the brand, but Donatella’s accessories almost always go over the edge of overt opulence; they’re often too ornate for my liking. However, upon seeing the Versace Structured Snake-Effect Leather Tote I felt true excitement. Sure, the overall design is simple, but the python print along with the coloring screams “fall statement piece.” (It also sort of screams “Valentino Fall 2011,” but that’s another post entirely.) The sad news is that PurseBloggers, we have a problem: the price.

When the description read snake-effect and the price showed $3,995, I was certain there was a mistake. A mistype, perhaps? But no, this bag’s faux finish is printed on leather; it’s not exotic python skin. And no matter how much I want to tell you all that Versace is getting it right, the brand is still getting its prices all wrong.

Versace Structured Snake-effect Leather Tote, $3995 via Net-A-Porter

How can a brand that has spent the last several years floundering around in its own accessories mess ask us to pay $4k for a leather tote? The Versace name does not have enough pull in the handbag world to be able to ask these prices and I do not know who will go out and actually spend it. I guess you would have to really, really, really love the design, and I don’t. I merely like it.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a Versace creation that I liked before even realizing it was Versace. The royal blue, brown, and cream color combo flows together beautifully. There are two top handles and a detachable shoulder strap for ease of use. I was happy to see the tasseled key fob is removable, and while I am not usually a fan of these adds-ons it works with this bag. What still doesn’t work is the price. Buy via NAP for $3,995.

I totally agree with you. It is overpriced. I do like the tote but it is just a leather tote… not even python…

I think the print is too graphic to come off as real so that’s another downside for me. Nice shape, nice attempt, but bad price and bad print!

I really, really hope no one looks at the bag, sees the price, assumes it’s real python and then buys it. Not all women look into the fine print when they shop, especially when they get that “feeling” (you know what I mean, ladies), so it could happen. I really hope it doesn’t.

I agree with Megs’ assessment of this bag. It’s like charging the price of a high quality real mink for faux fur. I don’t know which is more out of whack: the price of this bag or Donatella’s ego. I couldn’t even see the Soprano’s springing for this! It’s a three digit bag, not a 4 Grand bag! The day I pop 4 G’s on snake I want to see it slither, not moo!

I don’t even think it’s a three digit bag. It’s super cute but it’s feeling real Steve Maddenish to me. Kinda like one of those on sale for $88, $109 regular price… *shrug* Still really cute though- though “really/super cute” and $3K+ should never be used in the same sentence.

No. Just no. Not that bag and not at that price.

Sorry, I think this is just marketing. There are likely few of these made that will be spiffed to celebrities. Being comped a $4000.00 dollar bag seems substantial. I just think it’s meant to create an aura of value and desirablity that will get you in to support some lower price item.

Versace makes this same bag, with the shape/hardware details in red leather. They have quilted stitching along the sides of the bag that has Roman influence (at least they look like it to me…) …you know their logo shape but more. It is actually very nice. If you want to see a picture, go to Nordstrom.com. The red bag is also at a much better price point.

Maybe the price is what it is, BECAUSE it is so good faux-python.
On my own half, I would never pay K- from genuine python bag, cause snakeskin really is not very long ladting and usable material.
But I could spend for something more lasting and practical.
Good for you Donatella, there is futuristic values with this bag:)

Actually, flipping thorugh the September Vogue, I did see this exact bag in a Valentino ad.

I’m wondering why the writier was so hard on Sears vis a vis the sale of Kardashian bags that had some similarities to a Botkier, but is rather offhand about an almost 1:1 rip off in this case?

  • Be REAL

Well, isnt it every designer`s bags are over priced? and not only Versace? Like LV`s bags for example, to me they are too over priced and it is such huge mass produced products, so I think we all have been paying too much extra $$$$!!! Dont you agree? Cheers.

Very Jessica Simpson for some reason. Not necessarily a bad thing but it’s a very loud, in your face type of bag that screams ‘I”M A DESIGNER BAG!”
