Usually, I’m a fan of a complicated clutch. The diminutive scale of an evening bag lends itself well to intricacy and detail because it merely provides a taste of a particular embellishment instead of the overwhelming dose that can come when lots of beading and embroidery are applied to a regular-sized tote or satchel.

Every design theory has its limits, though, and the Valentino Embroidered Pouchette pushes my feelings about complicated clutches to the very edge. This little bag has two colors of leather, two separate areas of beading, and one multicolor lace pattern juxtaposed with one monochromatic lace pattern. Oh, and studs. It also has studs, both on a bow and on the bag’s wrist strap. This list is getting kind of long, right?

Intricacy is one thing, but this bag has too many competing ideas to work as well as one would hope. The elements don’t work together, and several of them seem like they don’t even belong on the same bag (traditional beadwork and studs, for example). Coco Chanel’s immortal advice that one should always remove an accessory before leaving the house would have been a great help to whoever designed this bag; let’s hope that they get it right next time. Valentino’s bags may be famous for their complexity, but this bag crosses the line into territory that’s best left untraveled. Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $1695.

This purse IS very complicated, but I think some people could wear it well with a solid and uncomplicated dress.

I like the creation of Chiuri and Piccioli but this bag is so kitsch! I believe that only Anna dello RUsso or some crazy stylist in a crazy magazine could use this bag…Thje other people will hate it and no one will pay almost 1700 $ for this horror thing!!

Let me say Valentino is dead. Till when these two new “sort of designers” took his place (and I do not understand why Ms. Facchinetti was not enough!) the brand is going to worse everyday. Their bags are horrible, full of bows —> somebody please tell them we are not 15 anymore!!! They are completely worsening the brand. Please stop them, I cannot recognize one of the most charming and alluring italian brand (in the past). I think Valentino is somewhere screaming…

Take away the bow and the studs on the strap and I would love it. But I agree, it’s a bit over the top.

I like this purse! It has a antique look about it, that’s makes it very sophisticated. Nice!

That purse is a hot mess of a craft project gone bad.

Looks like a Mary Frances bag!

I cannot believe this is a Valentino bag, what happened here? did their creative director take the day (or week) off?

I used to love Valentino for his refined, sporty elegance. Not anymore. This piece is a disaster. Very sad.

Aside from the gaudy embellishments, that shape doesn’t quite work for a wristlet.

Oh dear…and after that gorgeous clutch with the bird on it! This is quite a disappointment. The elements themselves are gorgeous, but all together is too much. I still love Valentino though.

I like it. I certainly wouldn’t put it out as a giveaway. It’s very chic and perfect for something that’s simple and elegant.

Maybe if the studs were the same color, or if the purse was one color. However, I like the color combo. (ipad)
