Yves Saint Laurent Lucky Chyc Colorblock Tote, $1350 via Net-a-Porter

By now, we all know what spring’s big trend are: Colorblocking, mixed brights, pink and orange, brights contrasted with neutrals. We’ve all been saying this since the collections made their fashion week debuts six months ago, and those looks have made their way to retail with a vengeance. And in the case of the Yves Saint Laurent Lucky Chyc Colorblock Tote, they’ve all showed up in one design.

I really want to like this bag, but I just can’t find it within me. I like the idea – the mixture of brights and neutrals, the bold swaths of color, the functional structure are things that I’ve been digging lately in almost all iterations, but this one just isn’t quite right. The yellow is too mustard-y and not bright enough, the mismatched neutral gussets compete with the rest of the design and should have been left the same color for the sake of symmetry and an ivory handle will show wear almost immediately with any sort of regular use.

Being on-trend doesn’t automatically make a design good, and unfortunately, this bag illustrates that perfectly. YSL came close to having a winner on its hands, and I still appreciate the functional structure (particularly the roomy and well-disguised front pocket), but the rest of the bag needs some tweaks to get it on the right track. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1350.

I really liked this bag until i read the post and noticed the mismatched side panels…now I look at the picture and it really bothers me…to bad it had great potential. :(

Not loving this bag… I’ve got a meh feeling about it.

i love this! the colours are awesome on it and the front pocket design w/i the logo itself is brilliant. doesn’t surprise me that its already sold out.

Even though I like color, I do not find this attractive at all.

  • DL

I like the sides of it. But overall. Ew.

Amanda, at first glance, I thought the bag was cute but after reading your thoughts on it, I totally agree with you.

  • ottercat

    Is it plastic?

  • 19yearslater

It’s a little too retro, but still pretty cute.

I like this bag and feel the colors work well together. I would not buy it but would wear it!!

  • ninjaninja

I don’t like the sides of the bag, it kinda reminds me of the chest plates that Dragon Ball Z characters wear.

  • Lynda

If the sides were the same color then I would love it. The colors do work well together though.

  • Katie

I love the front bright colors, however, I instantly saw the side panels and freaked! I need balance. I also feel that if one color were on the sides, it would have to be the lighter of the two!

  • fuchsiafury

What YSL has done to the leather on the sides of the bag is a terrible waste! What could have been soft, smooshy leather looks rigid – and reminds me of those Burmese Kayan women with the stacked neck rings.

  • KoutureCrochet

That is just too much. I can’t like it. I like the design and think it could have worked with two colors but it is just too 1990 with all those colors!

The colors remind me of my grandparents kitchen in the 60’s. I will pass

Very 70ies looking, I kinda dig it. I don’t like the mix matched colors on the side and for a tote it’s rediculously expensive. I might pay $30 to lug groceries around but not 1300.

  • Vanessa

I have been considering buying this bag,but not in this color. Can’t decided between the beige or green, plain and without the side panels. Love the front pocket.

  • DJ

Uh, sorry, but I think this bag is horrible in every way. The blocks of color are garish and the big Y looks more like it’s saying “YMCA” than YSL.

    too much colors.

I actually like this bag. It has a vintage, 1970s vibe to it that I don’t normally gravitate towards.

  • annabelle

i like the colors but not the shape…

  • fashionhogger

    Um, yes please!

  • Chris

I have to admit, I kind of like this bag. It has indeed a 70s vibe to it and would look great with some 70s jeans, wedge sandals, a white blouse, and a 70s sun hat and sunglasses. JMHO.
    It is just ridiculously expensive.

  • Cathy Fitz

Absolutely agree about the mismatched gussets and ivory handle. This could be lovely with those tweeks.

  • Laura

Dare I say that this looks cheap (like a design I would find at Walmart)… I like the concept (color blocking, shopping tote), I just don’t think it was executed well at all…

  • Joyce

Too many trends on 1 bag at a time makes for a hot LiLo-style mess.
