Once upon a time, in the 1980s, MCM was, like, a thing. Or at least that’s what I gather – I was still wearing diapers for much of that time period. They seemed to be fond of making logo-covered fabric bags, which were so obviously recognizable that they became easily dated when they went out of style.

Well, MCM is back with a new look, and it has nothing to do with their 80s logo’d messes. They’re collaborating with new designers to update their image, and the MCM Giornio Tote, designed by Marc Jacobs alum and Gryson owner Joy Gryson, is a strong statement of modernity.

MCM Giorno Tote

After seeing this bag, it didn’t surprise me at all that Gryson had had a hand in designing it. It has a lot of the same elements that her signature line does – thick leather, functional pockets, convertible straps. It’s tailored but still has a bit of slouch, and the hardware isn’t overpowering. In essence, it looks like classic Gryson to me.

And that’s not a bad thing – she designs bags that a lot of different women can incorporate into their lives in realistic and useful ways. I wish it had a bit more personality to it, but there’s definitely a market out there for “safe” bag choices, and this looks like it will fit nicely into that. If the materials are as good in person as they look online, I wouldn’t blame anyone for adding it to her collection. Buy through Saks for $1495.

OMG, I had no idea MCM was still around. I definitely was a fan back in the day. I still have some of their wallets that I use–love their design and function.

Too overpriced for an MCM bag!

Much to my horror a lot of the 80′s is making a comeback. Shoulderpads? Yep.

It reminds me a bit of Hayden Harnett’s Corcovado.

True, there is a market for “safe” bags, but surely one needn’t drop over a grand for them? Personally I can’t imagine spending that much money for something like this, it would have to be something spectacular, that I truly loved, and this is neither.

i totally agree with atrophia. If i wanted to spend 1500 on a safe brand then i would buy a classic chanel or a classic gucci or LV. They should price their bags a little better.

This bag isnt even in the store. The bags in the store are all priced under $1,000.
