The Many Bags of Sarah Jessica Parker

Since we started putting together our The Many Bags of… series, we’ve had a few stars with stunning handbag collections and incredible fashion pedigrees on our list that we’ve been waiting for just the right time to profile. Well, today seemed as good a time as any to get that started, and who in Hollywood (or New York, where she lives) is more of an accessories icon than Sarah Jessica Parker?

To many people, she’ll always be Carrie from Sex in the City, but SJP has some fashion chops of her own, as we all know. What I admire about her the most is her obvious willingness to dress for herself and for whatever she’s doing on any given day instead of dressing up for photographers just because she knows she’s going to be seen. In fact, paparazzi speculate that her dressed-down weekday outfits are in an effort to discourage photogs from stalking her; if she looks bland every day, it makes it harder for them to sell the photos. Even on her morning walks to school with her kids, though, Sarah Jessica’s usually carrying a fabulous bag, even if it is with jeans and UGGs. Without further delay, let’s see exactly what’s in SJP’s handbag closet. (She must have an entire closet for bags, right?)

When speaking of SJP, it seems to me that the only truly fair place to start is Fendi; after all, Sex and the City did help turn the Fendi Baguette into the world’s first true It Bag. In this photo, Parker carries a metallic silver Fendi Peekaboo Bag. Pick up your own Peekaboo via Neiman Marcus for $3720.

Naturally, the Fendi Silvana (with a croc flap!) had to make an appearance. The python version can be yours for $3110 via Neiman Marcus.

Wanna go old school? SJP and her Fendi collection can accomodate that request. This python Fendi Spy Bag is a total throwback. Shop Fendi via Neiman Marcus.

Sarah Jessica’s such a loyal Fendi fan that she had her black Fendi 2Jours Tote monogrammed with her famous initials. The other bag that’s along for the ride? None other than a Tod’s Signature Large Tote. Grab the Fendi via Neiman Marcus for $2260 or the Tod’s via Tod’s for $1845.

Second only to Fendi is Sarah Jessica’s love for Chanel bags – she’s been carrying this black quilted Chanel Chain Strap Shoulder Bag regularly for years, and there are tons of pictures with her and this bag in all kinds of different settings. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that both her favorite handbag brands are helmed by Karl Lagerfeld?

This grey Chanel Reissue Bowler Bag is another of SJP’s all-time favorites.

Sarah Jessica can even take a bag from a line that wasn’t all that popular, like the Chanel Coco Cocoon Tote, and make it look very chic.

(Wondering about that bright pink bag in the last picture? It’s the Diane De Maria Small Bonnie Satchel!)

Sarah Jessica, err, I mean Carrie carried this Chanel Ombre Leather Shoulder Bag in Sex and the City: The Movie.

Of course, we couldn’t complete our look at SJP’s Chanel without my all-time favorite paparazzi shot of her! She looks totally radiant and refined with a Chanel Spring 2012 Collection Tote.

I never picture SJP as a Louis Vuitton woman, but the French handbag powerhouse is one of her go-to brands as well. I’m a huge fan of this Louis Vuitton Monogram Empreinte Leather Speedy Bandouliere. Buy through Louis Vuitton for $2520.

Sarah Jessica can also take Vuitton in the complete opposite direction as well, like with this Louis Vuitton Spring 2010 Denim Shoulder Bag.

SJP’s handbag style is nothing if not versatile, though. She moves seamlessly between incredibly sophisticated pieces like this Akris Ai Tote, which can be had for $1670 at Neiman Marcus, and….

…fun, super casual pieces like this tie-dye effect Halston Heritage Shoulder Bag. (SJP was creative director of Halston Heritage until it shuttered last year.)

And just like that, SJP’s back to sophistication with the gorgeous L’Wren Scott Python Lula Satchel. The weekender version can be had through Barneys for $6900.

Often, it seems like all Sarah Jessica wants to carry are little crossbodies, some of them so nondescript that I can’t even place them. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem with the Jerome Dreyfuss Python Crossbody. You can have your very own for $594 via FarFetch.

Also not a problem? This little VBH Origami Python Bag. Neiman Marcus has it for $1750.

Prefer a bigger, brighter crossbody? SJP and the Salvatore Ferragamo Spring 2012 Collection Crossbody are here to save the day. Shop Ferragamo via Neiman Marcus.

Another of SJP’s petite loves? The Balenciaga First Bag in purple. Available via Barneys for $1395.

Without a doubt, though, SJP enjoys her Balenciaga bags in all sizes – this Balenciaga Weekender Bag is another from her collection that she’s used dozens of times over the years. Pick up your own for $2195 via Barneys.

Another awesome (and this time, slightly unexpected) weekender in SJP’s collection? The Coach x James Nares Limited Edition Beach Tote, featuring Nares’ distinct painted wave designs. This is one of those bags that I wish I had bought when I had the chance, but it’s long gone now. Shop Coach via Coach.com.

Speaking of unexpected, am I the only one who didn’t peg SJP as a potential Mulberry Del Rey Bag carrier? You can carry your own, complete with turtle hardware, from Net-a-Porter for $2220.

The only other Mulberry bag I could find on SJP was this Mulberry Alexa, which was used by her character during filming of a movie a couple years back. Grab your own Alexa for $1350.

During filming of the same movie, SJP’s character also carried the Loewe Amazona – I’m surprised not to see more Loewe bags in Sarah Jessica’s collection! Pick up a similar satchel for $1557 via Matches Fashion.

When out of character, though, SJP is a tad more whimsical – this Gucci UNICEF Snowman Handbag is totally adorable (and for a good cause!). Shop Gucci via Gucci.com.

Pierre Hardy is exactly the kind of designer I’d expect SJP to love – high-fashion, but not highly saturated in mainstream culture or overly branded. The Pierre Hardy Colorblock Shoulder Bag can be yours for $1055 via Net-a-Porter.

Gerard Darel is another widely-beloved-yet-under-the-radar designer that I’d expect SJP to like. This Gerard Darel Baltimore Python Bag matches her style pretty well.

Sarah Jessica’s appreciation for the Nina Ricci Liane Bag is similar – Ricci is a storied French fashion house, of course, but it’s one that’s most well known among an insular fashion crowd. Pick up your own Ricci bag for $1650 via Neiman Marcus.

Ultimately, though, SJP loves the big bag brands as much as we do. Look how happy she looks with her Dolce & Gabbana Miss Sicily Bag! You, too, could be that happy for $3325 via Net-a-Porter.

Of course, we can’t forget the Givenchy Tinhan Hobo. I really wish Givenchy made this bag in more versions! Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $1455.

And then there’s the Lanvin Happy Bag, very similar to the one we spotted on Katie Holmes several months ago! Try it on for size for $2160 via Neiman Marcus.

Of course, there had to be a bit of Dior. Sarah Jessica wore a ton of Dior in Sex and the City and carried many of the brand’s famed Saddle Bags. In real life, Parker enjoys the Dior Granville Tote.

SJP’s penchant for small bags makes her love for the Dior Lady Dior Tote no surprise.

We couldn’t leave without some McQueen, naturally. SJP and Alexander McQueen were friends, and McQueen frequently decked her out in his brand’s designs. Here, she carries the Alexander McQueen Novak Bag (to a Burberry fashion show. Ha!)
