Marc by Marc Jacobs Techno Wingman Wristlet

For a trend that’s going to be very easily identifiable as “so last season” in a year’s time, holographic bags are expensive. With brands like Celine, Stella McCartney and Proenza Schouler leading the way …

Burberry Leather Wristlet, $1195 via Net-a-Porter

In my mind, calling a bag a “wristlet” is a precarious thing to do for a manufacturer or retailer. The word “wristlet” brings about a very specific type of simple, relatively inexpensive small accessory; personally, I use a wristlet to hold the small pharmacy that I carry around inside of my real bag. I wouldn’t ever pay a thousand dollars for something like that.

While the Burberry Leather Wristlet is, in fact, a wristlet like its name would suggest, it’s also one of the nicer wristlets I’ve ever seen in my life, and a full-fledged leather clutch with multiple structured compartments. Don’t let the w-word fool you, this bag is a lot more than just an accessory to your accessories. (more…)

Marc by Marc Jacobs Snakes on a Frame Crossbody, $298. LeSportsac Divine Sunglasses Wristlet, $25. Both via ShopBop.

In my three years at PurseBlog, I’ve written a lot of posts that I never expected to write as part of my job here. For example, I never imagined myself Photoshopping a picture of a small, yappy dog next to a very expensive clutch for comparison’s sake. I never expected to write half of the things I’ve written about all manner of Real Housewives. Today’s Bag Battle, though? It might take the cake.

When I first saw the Marc by Marc Jacobs Snakes on a Frame Crossbody, I smiled at its relative novelty. A sunglasses bag! Cute! But yesterday morning I noticed the LeSportsac Divine Sunglasses Wristlet, and the coincidence seemed to fun to pass up. Of course, with two bags that share an unconventional theme, we have to put it to a vote: Which one do you like better? Check out larger photos of both bags and vote in our poll, after the jump. I’m a big lover of Alexander Wang‘s accessories, and when the designer debuted a boxy, hefty wristlet called the Alexander Wang Jade Bag for Spring 2011, I was so stoked. I was totally going to get one. The heft, the proportion, the hardware caps on the corners – it was perfection! Except that when I finally got to play with one of these precious little darlings, the bag had one very noticeable design flaw. Now, though, all of that is fixed. Or at least it looks like it’s been taken care of in this Spring 2012 preview photo from Vogue. (more…)

I’ve spent a lot of time and energy in this space complaining about how designers keep trying to make fur bags happen, and usually during those rants I also wonder about why more companies aren’t using faux fur for their ill-advised fuzzy bags. Few designers hesitate to use stamped croc or python, so why not a little fake mink or chinchilla? The primary argument that I see people making for real fur in outerwear is the warmth that it provides, and my phone and keys certainly don’t require my handbag to maintain any particular temperature.

It looks as though Prada has answered my prayers, as it so often does. The brand has debuted a line of faux fur bags for Fall 2011, and not only are the prices half that of most real fur bags, but no cute little critters had to give up their coats to make these designs happen. That’s right, I still don’t really love these bags, but I dislike them less than if they were real fur and twice the price. If that makes the sense. (more…)

Alexander Wang Jade Stingray and Suede Clutch, $795 via Net-a-Porter

If you’re a regular visitor to these parts, you might remember that back when I did my Alexander Wang Spring 2011 preview, I more or less drooled all over the Alexander Wang Jade Stingray and Suede Clutch. The stingray version of this design comes in both ivory with rose gold and black with matte black hardware, and I would have gleefully forked over the required cash for both options. A roomy wristlet clutch with exceptionally cool hardware and panels of exotic leather? That’s like asking me whether or not I’d like to have pizza for dinner: The answer is always “yes.” But unfortunately, reality isn’t quite as good as my dreams, and the clutch has one very important design flaw. Did you all hear that 49 of the states in the USA have snow right now? All but Florida. Unfortunately and fortunately, Vlad and I are leaving Florida to head back to NYC and I am beginning to remember why I am a Florida girl. Snow looks great in pictures and is great in theory – but I freeze easily. I prefer sun, sand, and palm trees. While I will be trudging through the snow and bundling up in the cold, I will remember that Spring is around the corner. Bright colors and beach days. (more…)
