As the year comes to and end, we thought it only appropriate to take a look back on celebrities, their handbags and the happy moments they made together. For 2015, we went beyond the usual Chanel Flaps and Hermès Birkins to celebrate some more interesting and seasonal choices; after all, variety is the spice of life.
A certain new style from Valentino is still cresting on its wave of recent popularity, and a few celebs continue to surprise us with their unexpected bag choices. In other news, Lady Gaga wore an outfit in public that was really only a LITTLE weird, and a few celebs accessorized their Halloween costumes with high-end handbags, of course.
Our metaphorical cup runneth over with celebrity handbags. We’re still sorting through pics from the hours preceding the Met Ball, and people’s pre-Ball handbags were sometimes more interesting than what they wore later that evening. And yes, you’re right, the Met Ball was last week, but there was so much to look at that we thought a tour through the pre-party looks we missed might be in order, plus some top-notch celebrity looks from the past few days.
The powers of the paparazzi are myriad. They have a strange ability to transform a “normal” person into an instant celebrity via their unwanted attention. (It’s happening again this week to the sister of someone you already know and love.) They can always recognize Lady Gaga in all of her various disguises.
If you’re a film buff, you’re probably aware that the Sundance Film Festival is taking place as we speak. If you’re not a film buff, you’re probably vaguely aware of Sundance because it’s the one week of the year when all of your favorite celebs are randomly photographed wearing parkas and standing next to scenic, snowy mountain vistas.
We’ll begin the new year with some solid celeb bag picks from the final days of 2014. The days following Christmas are always a blur of shopping, leftovers, air travel and, usually, more shopping. LA-based celebs did their usual laps around LAX and Fred Segal, which is pretty much always a paparazzi sure-thing, NYC-based celebs did much of the same, and still other celebs popped up in idyllic holiday hang-outs like Aspen, as they so often do this time of year.
Here’s Lady Gaga, leaving her “Jazz at Lincoln Center” performance with the legendary Tony Bennett, dressed like a Jazz Age vamp and carrying a Balenciaga Cable Strap Fur Shopping Tote. These bags debuted on Balenciaga’s Fall 2014 runway, and you can currently find a black calfskin leather version for $2,055 at Neiman Marcus.
Here’s Lady Gaga, arriving at her father’s restaurant, Joanne Trattoria, in NYC, carrying a vintage Hermes Kelly Bag that has been…well loved. Gaga has a history of carrying altered, or, depending on your perspective, “defaced,” Hermes bags, so it’s not a stretch to think that she likes the half-destroyed look of this one.
We’ve featured Lady Gaga on PB thrice in the last few weeks, in three outfits that were worlds apart from each other (as is her style), and yet two had something in common: Versace. Here’s Gaga coming out of the Sirius Satellite Radio offices in NYC after doing a little promo for her forthcoming album (which seems like it’s been forthcoming for 100 years), channeling Jodie Foster’s character from Taxi Driver.
Oh, Lady Gaga. Here’s her ladyship exiting her hotel in London, tempting fate and testing the patience of fashion lovers everywhere with a particularly outlandish hat choice. (I enjoy how all the Brits in these pics look particularly blasé about the whole situation.) When regarded individually, everything she’s wearing is pretty amazing, though I contend that her hat belongs in a museum and not on the head of an actual human being, for obvious reasons.
