Christian Louboutin has been far more successful with shoes than he has been with bags, and I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly why that is. Surely the design processes for each is decidedly differently, but for a brand with as many resources and as much style as Louboutin’s, I would expect better results.

Most of CL’s shoes have an inherent feminine sass to them that just doesn’t come through in designs like the Christian Louboutin Trophe Stud Bag. Louboutin has designed many a gorgeous shoe featuring zippers and studs, but his bag design with the same motif just doesn’t work exactly like it should.

The market is flooded with similarly studded bags at every price point, and in order for this one to make any kind of impression, it needed to find a clear way to stand out. Unfortunately it didn’t – the zippers zigzag across the bag’s body with little purpose, and the studded tabs that hang from the zipper pulls look sloppy. The leather is likely beyond amazing, as it is with most of Louboutin’s bags, but I wish that it had gone to a better purpose.

To answer my own question, Louboutin should definitely continue to make bags. Some beautiful designs have come out of the brand in recent seasons, and its clutches in particular are always a lot of fun. Louboutin’s handbag missteps have gotten fewer as of late, but unfortunately this is not one of his finer efforts. Buy through Saks for $1495.

It’s not my favorite bag from Msr.

I think this bag is not that bad… but he definitely make really nice shoes :)

The clutches are gorgeous, but this bag has too much going on with too little purpose. It’s not terrible, but it’s not the great that is expected with CL.

Not is best work ever, but I agree his missteps have become less awful over time. Too much going on in this little bag especially the price.

  • Valentina

Agree, the clutches are beautiful, the shoes amazing, but this bag is a little too much. It looks like a normal bag modified by a gothic, dark, violent, depressed art student.

The funny thing is, I usually *love* stuff that would fit that description. And yet, this bag still manages to not interest me in the slightest. Some sort of odd achievement, that is.

I tend to like black leather bags with studs and chains too, the same with shoes and clothes in general, but yeah, this bag kind of failed.

  • Cate

Those zipper pulls are WAY too busy. I hope he decides to stick with the pretty clutches!

  • supriapatel

just like all of his other bags this is absolutely HOrrendous

The Violet Loubis Patent Calf-Leather Clutch with the two-shoe kiss-lock closure is stunning. This bag is very ordinary in comparison.

  • Cara

CL shoes are so chic and perfect, so I understand why Amanda is asking why this talent isn’t translating into bags. I agree with the above posts the clutches are cute, but this bag is kind of scary.

This look has been done to death until it resembles roadkill, much like this bag.

As much as I love over the top handbags, this one is a bit of a mess for me. I think that if the designer had taken off one accessory before leaving the office, then the bag may have been better.
Maybe Louboutin should just stick to clutches. Forget the handbags.

Exactly!!!!, Louboutin expertise are in shoes….but if he really wanted to do bags he will need to find a great recipe of success like his red signature shoes…maybe red interior in the bag?

  • Bagolicious

Yes, I’ve been saying for years that he needs to stick to shoes as I’ve found his handbags dreadful.

  • itsy

It looks like something that might attack me when I wasn’t looking. UGH!

  • erama

don’t like it at all, looks a bit tacky and dare i say cheap….sorry!

  • deena

    2 words – cheap & ugly. sorry.

  • Sonya

Totally agree with everyone, this bag is a mess!! I almost want to say, his shoes are his children and the handbags are the step children who get no love, attention or affection.

  • xXXSOPHIIIEEE

I LOVEEE IT! I would totally buy it.

  • Tia

No good, stick with making shoes!
