A few years ago, Zac Posen had a handbag line. It wasn’t great. It wasn’t bad, per se, but it resulted in little consumer fervor and eventually went the way of the dodo bird. Now that Posen’s diffusion line, Z Spoke Zac Posen, has come into its own and found retail support, the company is giving handbags a shot again, but this time at a lower price point.
If the Z Spoke Zac Posen Top Handle Satchel is any indication, I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about the brand’s handbag prospects. One problem with Posen’s old line was that I didn’t get a sense of his clothes’ femininity and fun when I looked at them, but I see both immediately in this design.
Admittedly, the large leather bows on the bag’s gussets won’t please everyone, but they probably will please people who enjoy Posen’s aesthetic. That appeal was missing from his previous accessories attempts, which made it difficult for them to find an audience (and, most importantly, to find people willing to pay full price for them). With a lower contemporary price point and perhaps some new creative verve, maybe Posen can now find his handbag niche. Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $525.
