As the popularity of miniature crossbody bags has grown to eat up a larger and larger portion of the contemporary clutch market, we’ve seen a bit fewer of Lauren Merkin’s signature handheld bags gracing the pages of online luxury retailers. Her simple, straightforward Louise and Eve clutches have given way to a plethora of of-the-moment minibags by Marc by Marc Jacobs and Rebecca Minkoff, among many others, who are now getting much of the $600-or-less evening bag money.
But now Merkin seems to be prepared to do battle on the turf that was once firmly hers, releasing the Lauren Merkin Riley Speckled Leather Crossbody in both grey and black. It’s not a bad bag, and I hope it’s not the last of Merkin’s crossbody efforts.
There isn’t anything here that we haven’t seen before, but Merkin has shown a knack for understanding the shapes and materials that young women want to carry after night falls, and I have no doubt in her abilities to achieve the same things in crossbody form. At this point, though, I still think we’re waiting to see it. Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $225.
