Once you’ve formed an opinion about a brand or designer, it can be incredibly hard to shake. To me, Dooney & Bourke will always bring about mental images of sickeningly sweet pink bags that some of my high school classmates carried; that was my first impression, and first impressions have a reputation of importance for a reason.

As a result, every time I see something like the Dooney & Bourke Grommet Drawstring Shopper, I’m a bit taken aback. Not only is this bag attractive and functional, but it’s reasonably priced and totally appropriate for a grown woman. And the leather? The leather looks amazing. Why can’t brands that make more expensive bags use leather that looks this nice?

And I mean that as a serious question: Why can’t they? The even tone and pebbled texture of this leather is beautiful, and it would be just as beautiful if other brands chose to employ it instead of the thin, waxy materials that many of them choose. I’m not going to name any names here, but you know who I’m talking about, and they could learn a few things from this bag. Buy through Nordstrom for $465.

Amanda, I always a cringe at the site of a D&B bag. However, the drawstring shopper is a nice departure from their usual.

I think this shopper looks great.
Probably this is a cultural thing. I don’t think D&B sell in Europe – hence I have no bad memories.
In fact, several of my colleagues here in the US have a D&B bag and they are very happy with the quality of the leather.

Like any brand, Dooney has it’s major FAILS and it’s gems. D&B’s Portofino leather collection (above) is beautiful and feels amazing. I’ve never been a fan of D&B either but I purchased their calfskin duffle on a major sale and I love it. Total LV speedy rip-off BUT in actual leather of amazing quality and I get compliments every single time I carry it. *shrug*

Interesting dark neutral color; clean, no-fuss design; top quality leather; great price. Value at its best! Like it.

Thats a beautiful bag. Its a shame that most people only associate D&B with all their brightly colored bags. I can when remember when D&B All Weather Leather bags were popular, nice looking & well made, much like this ^^ bag. My first ‘designer’ bag was a D&B AWL that set me back over $200 in the mid-90s. I wish D&B would keep the basics like this bag on the front burner. The leather is amazing!

I never understood the negative connotations with Dooney. To me, there’s something for everyone with their collection. Most high end bag designers market a certain group of people.
The best thing about a Dooney is that the leather gets softer and better with age. The dye remains beautiful even after years of use.
Some are just snobbish when it comes to handbags and think that the second tier group of designers are somewhat inferior. When in fact I’d rather have a real leather Dooney than spend $1000 on a coated canvas handbag.

Totally agree! Mid-range priced designer bags usually represent better value on your investment, so you pay less for the real quality. Smart shoppers know that.

This is a word to the wise for all Dooney shoppers. The company in question will gladly allow you to make a purchase from their online site, but will change your order without telling you. I purchased 8 items during the 1

  • Dissatisfied

I purchased 8 items during the 12 days of Christmas sale. When I received my package, I found a small note in the special instructions section telling me that my order had been changed to 1 per item. The company never called, e-mailed, or otherwise notified me of the change. Rather, they allowed me to receive an incomplete order 2 days before Christmas. When I called Customer Service, I was greeted by disgruntled hourly employees who informed me that I was not quite good enough to voice my concerns to their superiors. The situation was not resolved, rather I am stuck 2 days before Christmas wondering what I can do to replace the missing 5 items. NEVER again will I shop with a company like Dooney, who allows their customers to be mislead and dissatisfied without any attempts to resolve the issues!

God, that’s awful! I can’t believe they would do that without warning you. Good luck finding new gifts.

Wow, I kind of like it too. It’s been a long time since I’ve carried a Dooney but I may have to reconsider. (ipad)

I don’t understand the snobbery about D&B bags either. I’ve been noticing their scrumptious leather designs on the arms of other women/ and did a double-take each time after I IDed the D&B duck logo plate. (ipad)

  • Cate

not a fan of the design-but the leather looks very nice! (ipad)

  • Cindy

I’m not drawn to drawstring bags, but the color is nice. (ipad)
