There is nothing new under the sun, but sometimes the similarities between two bags are just so specific that you can’t help but think of one when you see the other. I’m willing to excuse a lot of design overlap from brand to brand because trends and consumer desires often necessitate that designers produce similar things, but what about when the offenders aren’t even following a trend?

When I saw the Marc by Marc Jacobs Utilisexy Sam Tote, I couldn’t help but think of a whole litany of YSL products that look strikingly similar, most notable the Yves Saint Laurent Shopping Tote. Not only is the branding-like detail on the front rendered in a remarkably similar way, but the intent of both is the same – to highlight the designer’s logo in one way or another. Image of the YSL original, after the jump.

Some of the wallets in this particular YSL line contain even more similar usage of this kind of detail, but the almost identical (to me, at least) feel of these two pieces can’t be ignored. Marc by Marc Jacobs is usually not a line that copies others despite its relatively low price point, so I’m a bit disappointed that they chose to go this route. Buy through Saks for $548, or get the Yves Saint Laurent original for $945 via Saks.

I don’t think they’re too similar. They use the same method for the design, but the YSL reminds me of a cow’s butt tattoo and the MBMJ reminds me of a woman’s ankle tattoo.

The motif on the wallet I linked is more similar to the motif on the MBMJ bag. It may just be my perception, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

      Awesome description.

YSL also had a charms tote that this is even more like.

I like the bag. I am not a real fan of YSL so I don’t pay attention enough to see the difference.
To be honest, the Marc Jacobs is a handbag while YSL is a shoulder bag/tote. The shapes are not the same either.

While I love both, there’s not a chance in hell I’d spend 500 or 950 respectively, on either. And I LOVE a good leather tote.
