Does this Marc by Marc Jacobs Bag look familiar?

There is nothing new under the sun, but sometimes the similarities between two bags are just so specific that you can’t help but think of one when you see the other. I’m willing to excuse a lot of design overlap from brand to brand because trends and consumer desires often necessitate that designers produce similar things, but what about when the offenders aren’t even following a trend?

When I saw the Marc by Marc Jacobs Utilisexy Sam Tote, I couldn’t help but think of a whole litany of YSL products that look strikingly similar, most notable the Yves Saint Laurent Shopping Tote. Not only is the branding-like detail on the front rendered in a remarkably similar way, but the intent of both is the same – to highlight the designer’s logo in one way or another. Image of the YSL original, after the jump.

Some of the wallets in this particular YSL line contain even more similar usage of this kind of detail, but the almost identical (to me, at least) feel of these two pieces can’t be ignored. Marc by Marc Jacobs is usually not a line that copies others despite its relatively low price point, so I’m a bit disappointed that they chose to go this route. Buy through Saks for $548, or get the Yves Saint Laurent original for $945 via Saks.
