Diane Von Furstenberg gets in on the box clutch game

Usually, elegant little box clutches are the sole province of ultra high-end companies like Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen, who have turned their knot and skull clutches, respectively, into collector’s items and must-have evening bags.

For whatever reason, “contemporary” brands seem more reticent to step in to that particular bag market, despite the fact that McQueen’s skull clutches all but proved that the shape can be updated for a younger audience. Now one of the segment’s biggest labels is taking a shot at it: is the Diane Von Furstenberg Lytton Minaudiere Clutch a sign of more to come from the brand’s young bag line?

Of course, I have no idea whether this bag is a one-off or if the folks at DVF are looking to get in to the signature box game. For a brand that made its name making signature dresses, however, it wouldn’t be a bad continuation of the brand’s identity. I don’t love the finish of this leather for myself but I could see it being worn successfully by others that embrace a “haute hippie” sensibility. What I do love is the hardware – it’s unique and stands out from the rest of the design. Since hardware appears the be the key to uber-successful box clutches, Von Furstenberg could be well on her way to a new signature bag for her line. Buy through ShopBop for $325.
